Tire changer question

I am looking at a used Coats 5060AX tire changer but I don't know if I have enough compressor to run it. The coats site shows 150psi and 14-15 scfm. I have a big single stage 60 gal claiming 155 psi and 14 cfm @ 90 psi. Does anyone have a machine like this with an air drive turntable running on a single stage compressor??

Good morning Delray, I work on Coats changers for a living so I hope I can help you out. The air motor in this changer is a Gast motor and is crazy reliable but needs lubrication and air. The changer likes to run best between 130 and 150 psi and under a tough load will require a large volume of air to turn the turntable thus the 14 scfm spec. We see them run all day at less and do a good job but they will bog down quickly at less than 100 psi. Your compressor sounds like it's marginal but workable as long as you're not doing lots of run-flats or very low profile tires.

Should you decide to get it, get back with me and I'll help you with lubricating the air motor.

I have a 7050ax and am having issues with the breaker cylinder sticking. It doesn't retract when you push the pedal unless you bounce the breaker arm out against the nut to jar it.

Jbullfrog, another kinda classic problem with the later model machines. Usually it is the piston disc in the bead break cylinder. The steel part of the piston is pretty weak and cracks or distorts. Usually replacing the disc will cure the problem. Additionally look closely at the steel shaft as it comes out of the cylinder cap. If it is galled the shaft and probably the cap are shot. This was very common on machines that are newer than 5 years old. once again, any questions feel free to pm at [email protected]

I think your compressor would be fine.

I don't know the coats machine, but 14 CFM is a lot of air usage.

Anyway, your compressor has a 60 gallon tank - that means it has 8 cubic feet of air in the tank and could run the tire machine for approximately 35 seconds continuous without any pump on it.

The most action a tire machine gets is when removing a tire from a rim - then you have one revolution of the table - which is about 10 seconds followed by a 20 second pause and then another revolution of the table.

So you will be using air for at most 20 seconds in any 1 minute period of time.

In other words your tank is big enough to run the tire changer with no compression at all.

Now add in a compressor that delivers 15 CFM at 90 psi - which probably is at least 10 CFM at 155 psi - which means you can refill the tank in less than a minute - and you will be fine running the tire changer.

And most high end tire changers have an additional air tank on them - don't know if the coats does or not.

There is no hydraulic fluid used in Coats tire machines. The are powered by air.
