I've been fighting for space in my old shop/shed which is mostly used to store my extra truck parts and other miscellaneous stuff. I was reading on here about folks finding/using old tire store racks to get the tires off the floor, so I did some thunkin (it hurts too :wtf: ),.

Anyways I came up with a plan to make a tire rack suspended from the rafters. My investment, two old 8 foot 2x4s, some angle steel from an old bed frame and a few dollars in bolts and nuts. Couple hours later, I have my tire rack.

I was able to put 8 wheel/tires,plus the extra rim for my Dodge truck on it. For now, the two 35x12.50x15s still have to sit under it.

Started shift things around now that I have some floor space and ta-da. Now I have room to go and acquire more parts (I'm sure the wife would be thrilled if I did).

There is 17" between the 2x4s, and the top of the 2x4s are 36" from the upper rafter. I also ran a brace from the back 2x4 to the wall to cut out the swing, and bolted an old piece of angle between the two down pieces. If you have a wood frame shop/garage, this maybe a cheap way to get you some storage space. It is not fancy, but seems very sturdy and should do the job.

Oh yeah, and since is is 17" from the back wall, I can still hang small items behind the tires.

I accomplished basically the same thing but w/ less wood. In retrospect, I should have used a steel pipe. Hindsight....

I did this too, but I anchored 6 foot redi-rods into the rafters and set shelves at the appropriate heights (20" for tires on bottom, 8" for parts above). What like about these types of shelves is that they preserve floor space!!! Check out the photo (you may have to zoom in to the back corner...)
