To Many Wires?

I bought a construction space heater that requires 240v 30 amp outlet.

It is a plug in style so I also purchased an outlet (30 amp) with no green screw. , 8-3 wire with black, red, white, and bare copper wire. The breaker is 240v double pole 30 amp.

As I understand it. The red and black wires are attached to the breaker and the white and bare wire attach to the neutral bar. I just not sure of how the white and bare wire attach to the outlet. I am thinking that I didn't need the 8-3 wire or i bought the wrong outlet. Please help garage is cold and subzero temps on the way. Thanks

The plug you are using does not require the neutral. Simply do not connect it at the plug end. Since you already have the wire, etc, I would connect the neutral at the panel end and leave the wire unconnected in the plug/box end. This way you can swap to a different style plug in the future that does require a neutral.

The appliance has a NEMA 6-30P plug, you need a NEMA 6-30R receptacle to match. 10/2 Romex would have been adequate for this application. You can use your 8/3; the white neutral wire will go unused. The red and black wires should connect to the screws servicing the flat prongs in the receptacle. The bare wire should go to the round prong in the receptacle. Put a wire nut over the white wire inside the box.

Attach the bare ground wire on the other end of the 8/3 wire to the ground busbar in the panel/sub-panel. Attached the white neutral wire on the other end to the neutral busbar in the panel.
