Daughter in Phoenix has 1200 ft sq home 23 yrs old.Original equip Heat pump in attic has lost refrigerant and is running constantly, house interior in high 80's for days now. HVAC contractor that has helped them in past always very reasonable $, says she needs to replace heat pump range 7k-9k for the job. What do you Guys say ? DANG, seems high as hell to me but Im still remembering change back from a buck at McDonalds.

I built a house 2 years ago and new unit, all duct work, and installation was about $9,000. If just replacing a 2 ton unit, I would expect $4 to 5K in this area.

I paid $6,600 to replace mine in the spring of 2019. I got four quotes. Ranged from 6, 100 to 7,400 more or less. 1,400 square feet.

Unfortunately…………….Current “heat wave” and shortage of labor, units and parts ………..suspect prices are up 30-50% from 2 years ago are the new normal ?

I did this two years ago. 1800 sqft lake home, oversized (on purpose to help cool/heat after sitting empty during weeks). Carrier 3.5 ton, $5500 installed.

I had to drop another $900 later for all new copper lines, but thats another story for another time.

The price seems realistic to me with the equipment shortages and prices like they have been the last year.

Somewhere between $15.00 and $15,000.00...

Attic work, in summer, is going to be at at premium price.

Well, at least it was completely used up before deciding to replace it. :) no point wasting it :)

5500.00 in July. System on main floor. One man shop. Prices have gone up twice this year with another increase in August. System availability may be spotty. 2 Ton Carrier heat pump. Cheapest Carrier available

If you take into account your "Life Cycle Costs" which would include your fuel and energy costs for the life of the system you might be surprised.

I recall reading about a dairy farmer who heated a large barn with the heat from a decomposing manure pile. His energy costs were the circulating pumps and fans. Water backed heat pumps are also efficient.

Sadly, with the current materials cost and availability that is the going rate. Make sure you are getting a good quality, high SEER unit for that price though. A couple years ago it was almost half that. At that time a financed unit would pay for itself in reduced electric bill.

GF just replaced hers. It was a 3 Ton unit, cost $5800, no sure if she got a break on the price at all as she knows the company that did the work. Job was very easy due a drop ceiling between the unit and the furnace room.
