To sell or keep?

I'm sure everyone has one or two in their box, but I am having some trouble deciding whether or not to keep my adjustable (monkey) wrenches? I've got a set of three Mastercraft Maximums that are ok, and a regular Mastercraft with comfort handle, but ever since purchasing the Plier wrench from knipex, I'm not sure whether or not there is any point in keeping the others?

I guess the question of the day is, am I missing anything in terms of the utility of a regular adjustable wrench, over or in addition to the plier wrench?

Thoughts?

They come in handy sometimes for bending sheet metal.

Keep a couple. Throw one in the trunk toolbox, or basement, or kitchen drawer, etc. Never bad to have an extra(s) for when you don't want to use your Knipex.

Plier wrench and adjustable have much different offset head angle. So there is a time and a place for each tool.

- Also, when turning the fastener you can do the flip with the correct offset.
- In addition the PW requires continuous compression, which gets tedious sometimes.
- Lastly, the resale/depreciation loss on the adjustables is comething to consider

I just realized, I never saw a pliers wrench before now. I must buy some when they're not ridiculously expensive. I'd still keep the adjustables though either way.

After I discovered Plierswrench I sold my adjustable wrenches and never looked back...

But, I have many sets of "real" wrenches too; combo, box, open, SAE, metric, long, stubby...so my situation may be different from yours.

I've never had an instance when I thought to myself "gee, I wish I had an old school adjustable"

Kindof the line of thinking I was going with. 9/10 times I'd grab the wrench(es) I need, as I don't exactly have a shortage. I have combos, spline (which admittedly I don't need the full set exactly), ratcheting wrenches, ratcheting stubbies and a handful of mostly SAE extras in various styles. With that in mind, I really have no reason to get rid of them.

Of all the tools I own, I'd say the crescent wrenches get used almost never.

Come to think of it, it hind sight, I should have kept one or two. To lend out to people needing to barrow tools...

And I guess they're better than nothing to have in the trunk, if you don't want to carry a bunch of wrenches

Yep me too, even before I got rid of them they just collected dust. I honestly don't know what they're good for...

I rarely use my plierwrench...

Now that's where I have to disagree! I use the plier wrench almost daily! I kept myself from buying it for quite a while, but now i really don't know why I waited. Bought it for work, and it sure beats carrying various sized combos *or an adjustable for that matter, all over the marina. The 7 1/2" model is small enough to fit in the pocket of my work pants, but large enough to turn pretty well every fastener I would come across on the norm.

I must have a different mind-set than you guys.... Just because I have two different tools capable of the same job, doesn't mean I would consider selling one of them. That's just silly talk....

I rarely use my plierwrench...

Perfect for when you have to travel with a welding machine. One tool to tighten/loosen the gas fitting on the back of the machine, the regulator to the bottle, the tensioner on the wire spool, the nut on the ground clamp, etc.

Depends what you are doing I guess. I recently bought/started using pliers wrench a lot. Not wowed enough with them to get rid of regular adjustables. If somethings tighter than hell you will get it off much easier with some form of adjustable rather than the pliers wrench in my experience. You may say you shouldnt use one if thats the case but situation dictates what gets used and why.

They have their uses but I guess I have a bit of buyers remorse. If you insisted on having only one Id rather have a really good quality adjustable wrench.

You have a point! Quality definitely does make a difference. I was thinking about that, and realized that I do still have two other adjustables that I wasn't even considering getting rid of: an 18" Proto and my grandfather's old 12" Berylco, largely for the fact that they have been used for the odd job here and there.

I still prefer the monkey wrench over the pliers wrench. I guess it just depends on what you are working on. Most of those type of wrenches don't come out until I'm working on plumbing. I just don't work on plumbing much.

Knipex pliers wrench does not require user to continuously compress the handles. Just add pressure to the outside handle, no need to squeeze or even hold the other handle.

Like I said, they aren't taking up THAT Much room in the box... I just find myself reaching for the knipex for 99% of things since I got it. It was the overall utility of the plier wrench (which I have managed to use as a wrench, and a mini vice on a number of occasions) that made me think "Corey, when the heck was the last time you even used an adjustable wrench?"
