I built a small (3'x7') French Cleat wall. I'll be hanging basic woodworking tools and supplies on it, nothing super heavy. I'm thinking the cleats will be made from 3" strips of 3/4" plywood, ripped on a 45*. The studs are 16" OC and the skin is 1/2" plywood.

Any thoughts on how far apart I should put the cleats? I'm thinking 3"-4" between each cleat. How does that sound to you guys? Here are a few pics I took while making the wall.

Here are some of the things I'm thinking about hanging on the wall.

I'm also planning on using some plastic tubs in between the joists as shown in the one pic. The whiteboard in my first post is just hung up on two small screws, I take it down for sketching often.

I really like the floor joist storage idea. A lot! Absolutely gonna do that in my wife's craft room downstairs!

I'm a big fan of french cleats too. I've yet to actually build any but I've been drawing up plans and collecting different french cleat storage ideas ever since I first saw the french cleat system. Got my pole barn framed and sided this past fall and I'm eager to go french cleat crazy as soon as I can - lol.

I ended up starting out at 3" between cleats. I'm not sure where I will end up, but it works for the little laptop and cordless tool holder I made tonight. It holds my impact, drill, cutoff and jigsaw and the top doubles as a laptop/book/drawing stand. I like it.
