My Mac guy finally stops by work today. I have not seen him since November ( I even owed him a little money). My safety glasses at work need replaced and I keep forgetting to put a new pair in the van to take there. The Feb flyer has a decent looking pair for $12, so I figured I'd just get them and have that problem solved. Nope, he doesn't stock safety glasses. I then get the " business has been tough, I'm ordering stuff if guys are needing it but not stocking the truck."

I then see this item on the wall and decide I need one of these at work. ( I have one at home)

I know what I paid for my other one, and he tells me $43 for the one off the truck.

Now, I understand the overhead involved with the truck and a family to feed, but more than double the price?? I have always believed in 2 fast nickels over 1 slow dime. If business has been THAT bad why not turn over some fast nickels?
I like the guy, but there just is no haggling with him. Maybe that is why his business is not so great right now?
Tool truck guys......... how much haggling do you all do if business is not so great?

My SO guy seems to downplay the profit he gets from these items, but it's not like he'd tell me otherwise. However once in a google search I seemed to find a SO-to-dealer price list and the prices weren't much of a deal for the tool guys, so maybe he was right.

That's an obscene amount of money for that little LED light.

That's $.02 coming from a flashaholic.

We had a Mac guy like that. He always had to order everything everyone in the shop needed, and he hardly ever got anything new on his truck. Albeit I did get a few good deals out of him, it was almost always cheaper to buy non-Mac tools from another source. I haven't seen him in 6 months, and last I heard his truck was "broke down."

$43 is way too much for that light. And not having safety glasses? My personal vehicle, toolbox, and my home are littered with safety glasses. I have probably 6 pairs in my box at work. There is no excuse for not having a selection of inexpensive safety glasses.

Is this a thing with Mac. When I worked in a shop, you could almost set your clock by the time the Snap on guy showed up every week. We would see the Mac guy every once in a while when he decided to pop in.

There is a reason he is suffering, as others have pointed out. I am thinking that if I had to wait for a regularly used tool to be ordered in, I would find somewhere else to get it immediately, or overnighted. There is a reason they drive those big, heavy, trucks, and it is not because it is economical transportation.

my mac guy *****. After not seeing him for 2 months I ordered a butane soldering kit on sale, which I later found out was more money than my Matco guy regular priced. After telling him I wanted one, I got the "oh, I will have to order that" So, 3 weeks later, and many times needed, I still dont have it. He also asks for full payment on stuff under $100 usually, because he never comes around. Oh, and he waits for us to look at the specials, then takes the flyer back. must be rough. Needless to say, I hate mac because of him and his terrible business.

Our Mac guy lost his business because all the "mechanics" that bought tools from him then told him times were tough and they could not pay him more than 10 dollars a week on a 500 dollar purchase. They would hide when he came in. I feel real bad for the kid because he took care of me and started with a good attitude. Of course the more he sold the less he got?
