Todays Habitat grab . Ridgid pipe threaders

grabbed this today at Habitat for $15.00 . has 1/4, 1/2, 2x 3/4 &1" dies . the dies have been in water on the faces but only about 1/4" is affected. the dies are in decent shape, a few chipped on the imperfect threads but the perfect threads on the taper look good. missing the 3/8 ". I'd like to find one. I actually now have 3 -3/4" pipe dies .
going to set up an electrolysis bath to clean them up. some of the die caps screws are stuck , after electrolysis will soak them in penetrant and try to loosen them up .

last night, I saw just the handle for sale locally on Kijiji for $75.00 . and well used 3/8 dies on Ebay seem to be in the $30 to $40 & up range .
Will try to remember to take some pics of the rust clean up & post here . will be a while before I get to it.

Very nice find! Even in their current condition, they are worth a lot more than you paid.

You can always order replacement cutters for the dies that are damaged and likely still be well under the cost of a new die. You can always check out Ebay as there is a lot of NOS Ridgid parts on there, generally listed well below retail.

started cleaning the dies up today . also bought a 1/8 & 3/8 off an ebay seller, they are in transit
some of the cap screws were really tough getting them to budge.
hand impact worked on a few , but there were 4 really stuck. cleaned them up and welded some washers on them. the rust was no fight with vice grips turning the screws.
here they are with all of the cap screws loose or removed . not sure how far to go with these, after all this is GJ, but they are just tools too!

I just picked up a rigid set from 1/2" - 2" with ratchet handle and a 2" spiral reamer on ebay. $300 with shipping!! Needs some cleanup but all dies are in good shape.

So, I'm one more to say......you ****!

not sure how far to go with these, after all this is GJ, but they are just tools too!

You've already got far enough to take them apart... put them in evaporust or an electrolysis bath, wire wheel the bare metal parts, media blast or chemically remove the paint, clean them with a good solvent to get the years of threading oil out of the metal and put some nice paint on them.

If any of the dies are messed up, look for replacement NOS dies on Ebay.

They will be good as new!

Unless the dies are really rusty, they can also be re-sharpened.

FWIW, iron pipe tools; vises, wrenches, threaders, cutters, reamers, are all going for cheap these days. It's not being used much in home construction any more unless some obsolete code calls for it. Still widely used in commercial construction for sprinkler and gas systems..
