Just curious why you say it's a scam? It is a rediculous low price for something like that but just wondering why it's a scam. Not trying to start an arguement, just wonder how you can tell it's a scam right away or did you call him?

I'd drive to detroit for that deal if I thought it was real. I'm sure the owner is in Canada and after your payment has cleared into an escrow account through ebay they will ship it right out. I bet it belongs to Nigerian royalty

He purchased it at a "trade show" (and not a dealer?) and wants to sell it cheap, when he could have traded it in on that "Toolwagon TUV" and got way more than his $1800 asking price in trade. He never used it, just put a few "new" tools in it, yet he traded up to something even larger? which he apparently doesn't need?

Something doesn't add up.

maybe, I bought a 1950 Spartan travel Trailer from a couple in MI who thought I was absolutely nuts for sending a certified check for 2500.00, but I went out a few weeks later and pulled it back to L.A.

There is no maybe to it. They were stolen from the ebay listing. if you look at the background they are the same. The only way this is a legit ad is if they made a type o and left off a zero.

People Do it EVERYDAY... They get all excited about the thrill of saving 90% off Retail and send money via Western Union or cashier check. It may take 500 CL ads to get 1 donkey but obviously the payoff is worth the Work. Do you think they are doing all the work for Fun?

was the trailer worth 5 times what they were asking? did you talk with them on the phone? there are too many red flags on this add

Yep the First rules of scoring a Deal and Verifying if its Real.

1. Phone Number?
2. Contact info such as Name, Address?
3. How do they want Paid? Cash :thumbup:, Western Union send to a offshore account :spit: .
4. Is there some sad story about the owner being out of the country, Will you be getting a refund after the payment clears, If any of these scenarios come up.. RUN away.

Im not saying there arent deals out there and People dont occasionally Under value there stuff but i would be willing to bet 90% of Deals are BS.... Craigslist is Great that they offer free Listings but unfortunately the lack of Sercurity involved with opening up a account is Rediculus.

Even the Ebay ad doesn't make sense. He subtitled it "Brand New Huge Workstation - Over $20k Save Massive $$$" Yet if you add up the Snap On retail prices he gives in the Ebay ad, it only adds up to $18.075. Yes, $10,995 is probably a good price, but where does the "Over $20K" come from?

I think thats just your typical ebay jargon, I also flagged the CL add and sent a message to the Ebay Seller with the CL link.

You could show up at a meeting spot and get robbed. Happens all the time. Buddy of mine went for a "too good to be true" paint job on his 71 Mach1. The guy had a rented space and stole the guys car and had about 10 investors into his custom paint business. I got the guy his car back but it was about to leave town in primer.

This is the guy who pulls many of these scams around the country. He has warrants out in at least 7 states, claims to be a ex-army ranger and when I confronted him and he tried to run me over with his car. His name is Matt Clark and he specializes in investment scams, Custom paint scams and scams like this. Most of the art on his website is stolen from other painters. One of the trucks he shows was actually painted by Texas customs. Even has his wife and kids working the scams with him. Craigslist is his favorite scam tool. Here is his website. Real scumbag

I'm pretty sure the ebay add is for real. By the time all taxes were paid and a few options it was a few dollars within 20K. The ebay sellers feedback speaks volumes.

He's been jailed several times, he skips. I currantly have two warrants on him myself. One for assault with a motor vehicle and the other for theft. (he stole a 12 foot enclosed trailer from my shop and was caught by my security cameras). Never in one place more than 2 months

The Trailer was an all original 1950 spartan 36 foot. In original condition, including rims,owners manual,keys,all hardware. I was the second registered owner. and yes I sold it for 10,000 dollars on the west coast. I got very lucky looking back.

On a similar "scam" note; Came home from work saturday afternoon and found a couple "salesmen" in the house w/ the wife and kids... they were selling "cleaning supplies" (really just windex in gallon jugs for $50) err something, doesn't matter, had them leave post-haste. Wife got an earful about letting people in the house she doesn't know, while I'm not home... we have a 9yr. old girl and a 3mo. old son... must be a rural/farmer thing w/ trusting EVERYBODY... guys were missing teeth and their ties didn't match their pants/shirts/belt/shoes...:mad:

You need to sneak out every night and lake a leak around your house. It keeps the scumbags away. It's natures way of saying stay the hell away.

Oh yes, the overpriced windex people! They used to come around many years ago. White trash folks from out of state peddling cleaning supplies from door to door. Couldn't stand them. Same goes for the meat people who used to pester us about buying some meat from their meat truck. WTF? Get a real job!

Sorry, but I don't use CL really at all, never for anything large, so far. How do they scam you with fake pictures? I'm not doubting you guys here, if they are in an ebay auction after all, but I'm just clueless on what to watch out for.

You have to go through the judicial system and when I say I have two warrants on him I'm just listed as Victim. I'm the one who filed the complaint that lead to the warrant. Should he ever be arrested in the state of SC I have to be notified so I can be at his bond hearing. If he comes back into SC he won't be getting out very soon. He's wanted in 12 counties in my state alone. He skipped out on a 300,000 dollar bond in NC several years ago. In the last house he was living in they found a hole in the floor of a closet so he could hide when people came looking for him. He would send his young children to answer the door. I'm sure he will get wind I posted his information and show up defending himself in 12 differant screen names. He doesn't like it that I keep spoiling his scams. He skipped on this one also.

To be scammed by that style, you have to be a real idiot:
i.e., you send them cash via western union and never see it again...

The other style is that you are selling something, the buyer sends you moneygrams that are overvalued (say, $1500 when you were selling a $500), says they don't know how it happened, but they really need the money, could you wire the $1000 difference back to them?
Two weeks later your moneygram bounces and you're on the hook for the $1500.

These do not comment on armed robbery when you meet in person.
I've never felt unsafe meeting in person though, always seems to have worked out.

Not going to lie, have packed heat before when dealing with a Craig's List buyer.

Never know and I sure as hell won't be the guy put on ice in a hotel room with no kidneys if I can help it!

the kidney thing is an urban legend; there hasn't been a single documented case :)
But it does make a great iconic example of meetups gone wrong,
and sure as hell funnier than the plain vanilla, "had my wallet stolen"
