Toddler Workbench

The little guy is turning 2 soon. He loves to mess around in the garage with me but right now his projects are strewn across an old coffee table. I think it's time for him to have a proper, and properly-sized, work bench.

Can you guys share pictures or designs of kid-sized work benches you've made or come across?

No pictures as this was over 70 years ago: My father built a miniature workbench for me when I was around 3 or 4 years old. he equipped it with some kid-sized tools. One thing I remember is that it had legs that could be extended as I grew taller. I also remember that I had to put everything on my workbench away after 'helping' him with a project.

Brings back lots of great memories: As soon as I showed an interest in something, I was taught how to do it. Lots of times it took numerous lessons from my dad, but he was both a craftsman, and a very patient man when it came to teaching me.

About to do the same for my 4yr old. I'm taking my old craftsman box, removing the casters to lower it, and putting a piece of plywood on the top.

I'll get a small vise, and make sure there is enough of a lip on the edge of the top for clamping. He loves clamping things, and it's nice to be able to secure projects he might be working on.

What a great idea, and I fully recommend doing this!!!

My dad built a workbench for me and my brother when we were little. He put a drawer on each end, one for each of us, and made two shelves on it, again one for each of us. The shelves had holes drilled into the front part of them to put a hammer, screw driver, pair of pliers, adjustable wrench, and even a pencil.

What I remember most, and what I still have to this day, are the two small/mini vise's he put on the bench, one for each of us.

I have my mini vise. It is all metal, and looks exactly like a big vise. It even works just like a big vise, as it can turn 360 degrees around, and the jaws also rotate around.

It doesn't matter what you and the grand kids actually make on this workbench, even if it is only nailing a few boards together and painting them. What you are really making are memories that will last you and the grand kids the rest of your lives!!!!

I saw a unique thing on facebook for kids and should have kept the pic, but basically it is a 4 x 4 x 3/4" piece of good plywood. On one section it had a metal chalkboard so you could use the plastic letters with magnetics in them. Then in various places it had t simple deadbolt latch, a door knob, a couple of hinges, a couple of the battery operated push round push lights, a couple of keychains with the hasp on them, and just a bunch of various stuff like that where it teaches them coordination I assume. I'll look to see if I can find the pic and post it up.

I found one similar to it. I guess they are called "sensory boards" I found this on Pinterest. For a young child I think it would be pretty cool. It something to get their imagination going. It would also make a nice back board to a small workbench.

Cool that you mentioned the "sensory board." I made him on of those a while ago. Proof that kid like REAL STUFF... he knows what is a toy and what is a grown up thing.

I think that is the original Flux Capacitor before the final version was tested.....
