I would also be suspect of pin holes in the tank. If it takes air then you got a great deal. My first compressor lasted about 3 years and fortunately it let loose really slowly, HISS... POP, whooosh, BIG cloud of dust.:wtf:

When I bought my place, there was an old compressor like that in it. As I was moving it, it rolled over and a ton of water poured out. It had the drain on the end of the tank, half way up in the middle.

No, no please don't go there. remember that thread a few months ago on welding on an air compressor tank and how that went?

If it leaks he can just replace it with a big piece of PVC pipe. :lol_hitti

Nice score, good save from the scrapyard.

Glue bungs? No! No! No! Bungs should always be welded to the tank. See the previous thread about welding tanks.

Congrats but be careful! I saw a post a few months ago of an older compressor exploding and the damage was amazing. Luckily no one was hurt.

Easy enough to hydro test the tank - just to be sure.

Find out what the standards (ASME? ASTM?) requirements are but at least a minimum 2:1 against maximum operating pressure.

That's a goodin'. Does it run?

Well it's 3 phase so right now no. I have to find another heavy duty motor to run this beast.

Be careful tanks that old like to explode when pressured up.

I've never had one explode yet, I know how to inspect tanks. I have several scrap yard finds, the yard is only 2 miles from my house.

I would also be suspect of pin holes in the tank. If it takes air then you got a great deal. My first compressor lasted about 3 years and fortunately it let loose really slowly, HISS... POP, whooosh, BIG cloud of dust.:wtf:

I have 2 compressors of the same vintage with no pin holes, they used to build them well back in the day, I'll take this over any home depot junk anyday.
I still haven't decided what to do with it yet I have 2 2 stage pumps from the scrap that's in working condition as well not including my 2 80 gallon compressors That are my main air source. I'm thinking of selling my extra pumps and keeping this one as my backup compressor.

Just weld a patch on it....

lol I was one who would weld on a tank omg send a paramedic.

:bounce:

im assuming the guy put a price on it and thats not the actual price of scrap

They alway's do with items like this. I don't care If I can make a buck though.

Congrats but be careful! I saw a post a few months ago of an older compressor exploding and the damage was amazing. Luckily no one was hurt.

Not worried These tanks are built well This one is too clean.

I see a pos one on craigslist for 600 I might see if I can get good money out of it first.

If it is 3 phase it may have come from the military. They replace them every once and a while and someone got it not realizing it will not work in their garage.

I have a 2hp farm duty motor that I think might work I'll try that first and see if she pumps well, the reeds seem to be working it grunts from both intakes when turned.

I've got one similiar to that, only single phase and twin cylinder. About the same vintage though. Mine is a '62 I believe. It does have one pin hole that it just now accrued with in the last 6 months or so. They are tough old tanks for sure. you don't even want to see how I patched my pin hole....

Lol probably how I'd patch mine Fire up the 220..... I wouldn't tell anyone either they would just tell me my tank would explode If I don't get it certified. It's best they just don't know. This stuff is worth every penny and I know how to weld........lol I didn't just get my learners permit.....lol maybe I'll braze it......JK

LOL, considering I have a welder and barely know how to use it... so I'm basically clueless on joining metal.. but my old man would braze it if given the chance (old school methods man). I'm assuming the "brazing" comment was sarcastic?

My grandfathers 25+ year old craftsman got a small pin hole a few years back...around the same time it got a 2" x 2" metal patch over the hole. Been like that for 4 years now....

ya I was kidding, just to stir the pot a little brazing is too soft for a tank repair.
