When building my own cabinets out of 2x4 and plywood is it really necessary to build in a TOE KICK in the bottom of the cabinet? and how big should this "KICK " area be - - - maybe 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 ??????

Use them.
You will be kicking yourself and the cabinets if you don't.

i've built cabinets with a 4.5'' height toe kick area, a seperate frame out of 5/4 wood that allows me to level the bases before i put the box on. i usually go 4in deep with the sub frame because i tend to skin the kick area with higher quality material

Most toe kicks are 4" tall for residential and 6" for commercial, and about 3" back from the face.

I poured a 4" curb for my cabinets to sit on in the garage, so I can hose down the garage floor. I poured the pad to stick out about 3/4 - 1" beyond the toe kick area of he cabinet. I'll be damned if I don't find my toes resting against that curb. You wouldn't think 1" would make a difference, but it does. Build them with a toe kick.

^ nice idea with the curb. I used to wash my garage frequently, it was a simple way to keep it clean. Now I vacuum and mop because of all the large, heavy, rather inert objects it holds.

A lot of what you need will depend on the overhang of your bench top, since that will determine where you stand while working. I was almost finished with this bench when I realized my toes were still going to bump the thing, so you can see I made the 'trim' so there was slightly more inset on the standing side.

In this case, I was already raising the 30" cabinets up so that the bench height would be right. I made long stock storage underneath. It's not exactly finish carpentry (it ain't hardly carpentry) :) , but my toes fit and I can store pony clamps and cheater bars underneath.
