Re: Toilet and concrete in garage

Sloped cement floor in garage. How do I level (shim) the toilet on a polished concrete floor?

They make PVC/plastic shims that you can insert between the floor surface and the bottom of the toilet. From algebra, 3 points will always be in a plane. Two shims and the toilet edge are your three points. Trim the shims with a razor knife flush with the toilet perimeter, caulk neatly to conceal/seal.

I failed algebra the first time around. 3 hours study per night and was happy with the C-. Thanks for the reply. Kind of like a tripod, it can be leveled and is sturdy. Thanks for the help.

Yup I agree. You can use wood shims too cut knifed and snapped with pliers, channelocks, etc. I don't like to caulk but when I do, I just do the front for looks. You wanna know when it's leaking right away even on concrete imo.

I would recommend the plastic shims over the wooden ones. If moisture builds up under the toilet, the wood ones could rot.

FYI- Our local code requires the toilet be caulked all the way around at the floor. Your mileage may vary!

That's surprising. I left a 1/2" opening front and back on mine just in case. Don't want to wait for a warped floor to tell me it is leaking.

set the bowl dry and mark around the base with a pencil. lift the bowl ,prepare the wax seal and bolts . now mix up some plaster of paris and drop it inside the mark set the bowl and level it as you tighten. clean the excess plaster with a wet sponge and let it dry . the toilet will never move now

From what I've read I think thats the case in most areas. But most plumbers seam to leave the back open according to postings on the plumbing forum.

That's what I do too. Same as the caulk issue, I leave a gap in the back.
