Toilet flange placement

I was all set to place the toilet flange for “normal” 10” rough in American Standard. Then I ended up getting a deal on a skirted ADA height kohler unit.

It’s got a deal called a “Trap Conversion Kit.” Available in 10” and 14”. I haven’t seen a 12” but maybe.

Does anyone know how this affects flange placement? I would’ve guessed it works with both a 10 and a 12 inch flange placement (from the stud wall). With an adjustment I may make for an 1.5” interior finish on the wall.

I’m trying to conserve as much space possible in front of the toilet. So I’m thinking the 10 inch deal would work best for this.

Not sure what exactly you're asking about with that part pictured. That is basically the lower 1/3 of the trap for the toilet(s) it's designed for. It won't just work for any toilet especially if it's a AS toilet and Kohler part

I think I could manage a standard American Standard 10 inch toilet. And flangeplacement.

Instead, I picked up a Kohler from Restore. I’ve never seen this type of deal that goes between the toilet and the flange.

I’m wondering how this toilet design affects the flange placement. I’m half tempted to throw this thing out.

I’ve laid it out exactly as it will be installed and it looks like the flange center should be 14-15 inches out from the stud wall.

In all the previous stuff I’ve looked at people talked about 10 inch from the stud wall or 12 inch from the stud wall.

I never have been quite clear on how you figure in your finished surface thickness. They may have been assuming 5/8 sheet rock. I’m going to have a full inch and a half wall covering. So maybe 14 inches isn’t crazy.

I’ll replace everything on the toilet before I install it. With that big plastic fitting were discussing, I can’t tell if it gives me some options about where I placed the flange since it comes in a 10” and 14” size.

I had a perfectly functional American Standard dual flush toilet that was 2 years old at most that I needed to replace with an ADA height one.

I made sure that it was clean inside and out, but Restore didn't want it. Trash guys would not take it either until I wrapped it up in a large lawn trash bag. What a waste.

That gizmo looks like a leak waiting to be hidden under the unit. From your pics it looks like you could take some time and do it below the floor and be done with it.

Ah that makes more sense now.

14" is an older rough in dimension. Think old huge tank 5 gal or 3.5 gal per flush toilet. I would guess that Kohler replaced one of them and Kohler has either rough in available. This saves design time and tooling on the Chinaware molds. One bowl multiple rough-in dimensions by changing a simple part.

If that plastic adapter is compatible with your model Kohler and it saves you the room you were talking about then go for it. I'd guess the American Standard 10in is going to be more compact (I may also be biased 😉)

BTW remember rough-in is measured from your finished wall. Take your wall material choice into account.

The rough in measurement is from the finished wall surface to the centerline of the flange. That thing you have up above looks like something to avoid. If saving space is more important than saving dollars you might look at some of the in wall units.

Rough in is measured from edge of framing,not finished wall.

I have to disagree. You can probably get away with it depending on the design gap from the back of the tank.

As a former toilet engineer, we designed from the finished wall and so do all of our competitors. (Queue the jokes)

Well as a licensed master plumber who's roughed in /installed a couple toilets over the years,I'll stick with my story. Hahaha
How many toilets do you think are roughed in after the sheetrock is up,versus how many are roughed in after framing is done in a house?

Looks like this one is spec’s from the finished wall. I don’t know about others.

I'm not a plumber, but I have installed a few toilets, and I read the instructions first. All of them gave the rough-in dimension as a measurement from the finished wall.

Agreed, all I've ever seen specify distance from the finished wall.

Yes, really. It involves pretty intensive CAD work and understanding specific fluid dynamics. You also have to understand basic things like designing molds (drafts, things to avoid like undercuts, etc). You also need to understand ceramics kind of like you would make in a pottery class.

How many toilets do you think are roughed in after the sheetrock is up,versus how many are roughed in after framing is done in a house?
I don't mean to question your experience. I certainly am a novice plumber. But its just a fact of what we do in the industry on the design side. Some tank designs give you less leeway to clearing the wall.
