I have a toilet that keeps running intermittently. The toilet is an Eljer with a two-mode water saver. I have not seen this problem before. Any recommendations?

I just found the manual for this toilet. It is a discontinued dual flush model without the flapper. I am thinking a may have to replace the dual flush valve.

Put food coloring in the tank and see if the water in the bowl changes color.
If it does the flush valve is leaking.

If more water is entering, and it isn't leaving over the rim of the tank, the only other place it could be going it down the flush valve.

The flush valve IS leaking.

See if you can find a replacement valve part.

I would bet on the flapper valve. If it is running ittermitently the water can only be leaking on the floor or going into the bowl. The only way it can get into the bowl is from the flapper leaking.

Time for new crapper guts.

I've found that the water around here is acidic enough that every 5 years I replace all the mechanisms in the toilets.

If it doesn't have a flapper, it is new valve time.
Do not be surprised if there is a repair kit that goes back to the flapper style design.

Check the hose from the valve to the overflow drain. If it is too far down the tube it will siphon from the tank. Pull the hose up may stop the problem.

Mine did this and drove me crazy before I found it.

Good luck.

I recently had a leaking toilet where it was the incoming water valve assembly - that the float controls.

Mark the water level in the tank, turn off the water for the toilet and let it set overnight. Check the water level the next day - if it is down then it is your flush mechanism leaking. If the water level doesn't go down, it could be the incoming water valve

A Fluid Master flusher fixer kit will rejuvenate most toilets.

I am a fan of Sloan Valve Flush Mate systems, but they can not be installed without replacing the tank and bowl.

The other possibility is that the end of the bowl fill hose is below the level of the water in the tank - this will cause water to siphon out of the tank and into the bowl. I have had this happen more than once and it can be difficult to diagnose.

Toilets ****! Oh wait that's a whole other subject. Just recently replaced the guts in two toilets. One at my house and the other most recently at Pops house. Talk about lack aof a standard, toilets. Both were running because the water valve was corroded or whatever they do from the deposits in the water.

My vote is water valve.

Just fixed mine today. Float was set to high and water level was above fill pipe. Eventually water would drain into toilet bowl so float would put more water in Readjusted float so water stops about 1/2 inch lower. Problem solved
