Tolerance on 5.5mm Hex Impact Bit Socket

I just bought this socket from Texton and it is slipping in the fastener.

The measured dimension on the flats are 5.39mm, 5.39mm and 5.40mm. My Husky allen key 5.5mm dimensions are 5.53mm, 5.47mm and 5.59mm and it is grabbing but I don't have room to give it the oomph needed to break the fastener free. Is this Texton socket out of spec? Will call them on Tuesday and planning on returning it. Guess I need to buy another socket.

Having a hard time finding anything beside Texton. I have an old Craftsman set with a 5 and a 6 but need the 5.5. I see a K-Tool International chrome socket that I can get from AutoZone for $14.30 delivered or I can buy 7 of them from Zoro for about $18.50 delivered with coupon

Thank you, that is a good option. It is a 1/4' drive and I would rather have a 3/8" drive and I don't think they have one. This is a fastener on the drive belt tensioner on my Tundra and it appears to be tight. Could use an adapter but think I will have to lean on it so a little concerned..

It's a Toyota so metric but I am going to verity the size again in the FSM.

This is a fastener on the drive belt tensioner on my Tundra and it appears to be tight. Could use an adapter but think I will have to lean on it so a little concerned..

Those are 6mm and can put up a pretty good fight. I have used a standard length 3/8 drive Snap-on bit socket successfully where cheaper bit sockets failed at removing these. If it strips, a T40 torx is said to work, but I haven't tried it.

My best 5mm tools are -0.01mm, some fair ones -0.03, worst -0.06 which will slip. So -0.1 is definitely too much.

Those are 6mm and can put up a pretty good fight.

Another angle on that: I bought some KTC hex bit sockets today and they don't do any half sizes, and I bet they would if Toyota used them.

Well, I may have hosed it up. I was looking at a youtube and it said it was a 5.5mm but the FSM says 6mm. I tried my 6mm after the 5.5 didn't catch but it didn't want to go. I will try more aggressively. If I can't get it to go will order the 6mm 3/8" socket you recommended.

I've bought boxes of hex keys and had to figure out what size some were. There seems to be a lot of tolerance, and sizes like 5.5mm and 7/32" could be either one. It's my understanding that the hex key should be +0/-***, so those that are over 5.5mm seem like they might actually be 7/32". But maybe they just pop out a batch of "about that size" and use them interchangeably. 0.1mm is only 4 thou, so I wouldn't think that is outside any actual tolerances.

That RBRT stuff is a life saver on small headed fasteners be it hex torx or tripple square.

Once you get the 6mm make sure to clean the **** from the internal hex. HAMMER it in, perhaps with a bit of valve grinding paste for some addition purchase on an already damaged(?) fastener.
Toyota hardware + Ohio salt bath, good luck, sir.

The 6mm fit in fine with a little wiggle (no hammering required) - it's so much easier when you know it's supposed to fit! It busted free without too much hassle. No damage to the internal hex bolt head so I lucked out there - glad I backed off quickly. Thank you all for your help! Some rust & build up and I cleaned it up good and plan on reusing it. Glad I am replacing the tensioner as the pulley was a little loose & noisy. Also replacing the idler & the belt.

This is the youtube I referenced for the 5.5mm size....I commented on the wrong hex socket size.....I do think she knows what she is doing but that was a miss.

The difference between 5.5 and 5.4mm is .004". A typical human hair is .003" diameter.
