Tongue and Groove Issue Perhaps ?

So I'm over helping the neighbour put down some 3/4" plywood underlay this afternoon and an issue arose. The tongues and grooves are quite noticeably closer to one side so if you don't get them the right way you have a heck of a time mating them and then there is a pronounced ridge ( that'll have to be sanded down ).

I tried to get a picture using my cellphone but you can't really see the detail.

Is this common ? I don't ever remember having this issue before.

As long as they are the same thru the whole bunk of underlayment, whats the big deal. Usually there is writing on 1 side and nothing on the other. Should be pretty easy to keep the correct side down.

But you are correct, I'm used to the tongue and grooves to be in the center of the edge of the sheet.

Most tongue and groove materials have the tongue slightly off center. It helps shed water when the joint is on a vertical surface horizontally. It's really noticable when you have 18' 2x6's and are trying to hold them up and screw them.

In most cases the stamps goes face down, I have seen some sheets where there are stamps on both sides. When that happens I put the nicer side up. Grab a sledge and a 2x4 and pound away. You want to pound the tongue into the groove

Thanks, folks. Took a trip to Home Depot yesterday and looked at theirs and indeed it is also off centre.

Well, you learn something everyday, I guess .....
