Saw a bowling ball canyon at the local gun store, only $1500. I thought that looks pretty easy to make. Did some research and found out I would need a 300cf gas cylinder, that was $300 + so I decided to drop the idea. I was on the phone with my gas supplier and asked about a cylinder and he gave me one for free so I had to move ahead.

Check out the video for the end result.

I like it. Have a beer can mortar but this is big and bad. Would be a fun project if you have a safe place to fire it.

So. Uh, how exactly does one get a supply of bowling balls? I mean, I can see walking out with the goofy shoes, but the balls?

You can buy used bowling balls fairly cheap. A buddy of mine buys them and pins from the local bowling alley for very little and uses them as shooting targets on his gun range.

Very cool!
My cousin built a tennis ball sized one on tripod and dbl swivel that could be aimed at a target.
He also welded a bung for a sparkplug that was wired with a capacitor by way of an 9 volt batt.

I have two questions: Is there a danger of the bowling ball squashing the powder and igniting it when you drop the ball into the tube? I ask because I know when I was a kid, the old cap guns worked by striking them. Remember the red rolls of caps?
Well, if you took the whole roll and smashed it with the end of a 2x4, the whole roll would explode from being struck.
Any chance of that with the bowling ball rolling down the tube and hitting the powder?

Second thing: I looked at several other videos with bowling ball cannons, and they all are lit with a fuse.
The cannons of yore used a touch-hole. The powder charges were pre-made and loaded into silk bags. The bag was put in the bore, the ram rod ran the charge down the tube, the "wad" was put in next and rand down to seal the charge, then the ball was ran down.
At the other end, a spike was jammed into the touch-hole to pierce the bag of powder, then the match was touched to the touch-hole to ignite the powder and away she went.

After that a wet ramrod with a sponge or wad of rags was rammed down the bore to smother any burning wad and powder remnants, and the process was started over.

So, given that: Why not bore a hole at the base of the cannon tube and do it the old-fashioned way? Light the charge with slow-match on a stick.
I'd rather do that than rely on a chinese fuse that burns at inconsistent rates, or goes out. Who wants to worm a cannon ball out of a cannon with a full charge and a fuse that MIGHT be a dud???

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it when it went off. Just in case. Another option would be the model rocket ignitors connected to the little launch controller.

I am using cannon grade black powder, not exactly sure what the difference is. The bottom of the cannon is made of a solid piece of steel. I bored a 2" hole 2.5" deep, I drop the powder into this chamber so the ball does not touch it. I also have a tool I made that holds the ball using the thumb hole so I can gently lower it in so it won't hit the bottom at any speed.

So far the fuse is working 100%, have been been using 2-3 ft so it takes over a minute so there is plenty of time to get clear.

We found 2 of the 3 balls. After the 1st shot I had my buddy go downrange and to the side to see if he could spot where the next on landed. He said he heard the ball in flight but never saw it. He did see the dirt fly when it landed and after about 10 minutes of looking he found it. If you go to the end of the video there are a couple of pictures of the crater and ball.
