I understand your point perfectly. I just doubt if all the men and women who have stood in harms way for what the American Flag stands for could understand equating damaging a ratchet to burning the American flag. I sure do not.You probably don't understand the point I was trying to make. The point was that I hold Snap-on tools close to my heart; the same way I hold the American Flag close to my heart. I guess I shouldn't expect anyone to understand that though.
I'll try to explain, but words aren't always the best means of communication. If you were to ask me which American product that comes to mind first as being the product that I'm the most proud of for being made in America by hard working Americans, Snap-on tools would be it.
If I were to beat on a wrench with a hammer, it would be a wrench made in red China; and I'd enjoy beating on it with an American made sledge hammer.

You would hate watching me work. Half the time if I'm under a plane, and I can't carry all the tools from one side to the other while working on landing gear or something, I slide all my tools over there, then slide across myself.
Oh, and If I've just spent 15 minutes crawling into a hole no bigger than myself, around bleed air and service air lines, air cycle machines, etc...to find out I forgot a hammer or something, you can damn well bet that wrench or ratchet is serving hammer duty before I crawl my **** back out.

how true when I'm in a Folder its the same thing...... the wrench ,ratchet press bar anything will do........
and as for using a impact gun on everything i wish it would fit, nothing like a ratchet + cheater bar + 5 lb dead blow.........

It's nice to see someone enthusiastic about something. The guy likes snap-on... nothing wrong with that.
Now if he starts goose-stepping around town square with a Snap-on flag threatening to crush the Mac infidels and burning cornwell catalogs... I'd start to worry.
Give Merkava a break. Yeah, he's a little fanatical, but who isn't to some degree about something. I know he's the first guy I would trust to borrow my Snappy tools. Heck, they'd probably come back nicer than they left.

Merkava's awesome! He KNOWS tools and can quite hastily find you parts for one. This place wouldn't be the same without him.

I agree, while some of his comments are a bit eccentric, his intentions seem righteous enough. Besides, I have a similar over-protective view regarding tools. Heck, if I'm at HD or Lowes, I'll go through the entire row of hammers before I find the one with the least blemishes. Sure it's going to get messed up the first time I use it, but I want to buy the prettiest hammer available at the time of purchase.
If you guys remember, I was really fed up when I ordered the Vise Grip sheet metal tool. The jaws were unevenly curved, there were burs on the jaws, and it scratched my metal. I went through three replacements before I shipped the whole lot back.
So yea, cut him some slack. Some of the time, he's just saying what a lot of us are just thinking.
I would never ever buy a ratchet that looks like the one in the first post, and would never let one of my "good" ratchets get to the point where it looked like that. I would walk over and get a breaker bar or a beater ratchet if it was possible.

I don't see why you have such loyalty for Snap-On. They're just a company that wants to make money by selling you tools for more than they cost to produce. I own lots of Snap-on too, but if anyone else brings out a tool that is 0.001% better for the same money or $0.01 less for the same quality I will buy it.

Sorry to double post, but forgot to point out that loyalty to one particular brand (regardless of whether they deserve it) only reduces competition, inflates prices and kills innovation. Companies have to EARN my purchases, not just rely on a name and blind brand loyalty.

I have had BAD habits in the past. There were days when I'd visit two Sears, two Lowes, and two Home Depots just to pick up half a dozen tools. I'm very picky about the brands and condition of the tools I buy.You do that too????
Lowes only sells 7/16" center punches separately, no other sizes, HD doesn't have the brand I want and only has spring-released ceter punches anyways, but Sears has a few different sizes. Not to mention, Sears was the only retailer that caries ***** punches.
I am a VERY critical person, which is why I love ordering most of my tools and accessories online now. I cannot even get decent ball peins locally. I prefer Vaughan, but my HD doesn't carry the sizes I wanted, Lowes only caries Stanley and Kobalt, and Sears carries metal handled ones which I didn't care for.

Everyone is entitled to express his/her opinion. I certainly wouldn't block anyone and I have disagreed with others opinions often. Thats what makes this forum great.
Don't forget, Merk hasn't owned up to owning those Craftsman screwdrivers yet.
I still carefully inspect each Snap-on tool before I buy it; so therefore, I wouldn't consider myself blind sightedly loyal for no particular reason. I got hooked on Snap-on for their quality and because they're comfortable to work with; but I also like other brands such as Williams, Cornwell, MAC, Proto, Matco, Armstrong, Klein and Knipex; however, if I had to choose just one brand of tool to use exclusively, it would be Snap-on.
On a side note: You guys are a great bunch of guys and I enjoy every single second on this board.

On a serious note, it makes a difference sometimes. Quite a brands are subtley changing packaging, or even just the label printing, and a 20 second observation makes the difference between buying a made in USA/England or "made in PRC to Irwin's specification" version.

When I changed the brakes on my Pontiac this year, I had a problem with the bolts that held the caliper bracket on. The manual said they were supposed to be torqued to 120 ftlbs. The 15mm wrench I was using was not going to give me the leverage to get them off and an impact wrench wouldn't fit, plus I don't have one anyway. I resorted to the poor man's impact...a rubber mallet and PB Blaster. I gave a bunch of quick light hits on the end of the wrench and the bolts finally gave way. Not a single mark on the wrench.

I was thinking about this thread today. As I was working on the old 1990 Blazer. Lots of rusted bolts, So I gave my snappy wrench a extra tap with the 3 lb sledge.

I guess we just view our toolboxes differently. Mine are just glorified storage items. Maybe if i had nice boxes (Snap on, etc) then i would look at them differently.
I don't plaster them with stickers, just a few here and there....

Man there are some funny posts in this thread. "Won't even cuss in front of his tools" cracked me up.
To each their own I say. I look at a well used tool that has lost the gloss of newness and see a patina of good work done and a return on investment. Wrenches and sockets are tools and are not fragile gentile things. They are the companions to grunts, grease, dirt, sweat, knuckle blood, and at times a bad word or two. Sometimes all at the same time. They are to be treated with respect but use them as needed to get the job done. That is what a tool would want if it were animate, to be used to do good work. Some folks forget that all work is not on clean shinny new stuff in clean well lit air conditioned shops with plenty of time. Getting old rusty bolts that are in hard to reach places while on a job-site might call for a wrench and a hammer both of which will be dropped to one side as you dig into whatever now that is open or off. The wrench might be sporting some dents along its struck end but that is life, it and you, got the job done and are 100% ready for the next one. No flitting around telling the boss you need a tool you don't have in hand and not getting it done.
I don't kick mine across the driveway and I try not to set them in the dirt as I am working on something but I don't have tool trays with little protective doilies ether. I too like cardboard but don't require it. What ever works for you is the best way for you.
I got an idea from this entertaining thread. I am going hang a crappy wrench on the wall with a sign under it that will read "If you get pissed, throw this one"
