Does anyone know if snap on will buy back tool boxes. We bought a limited dale earnhardt huge box when he died. Ir has never had a tool in it and it has been in our heated basement. We have tried to sell but cant get any interest. Any ideas would be appreciated. We are moving I. The next year and need to get rid of.

It's up to each individual driver but most of them don't mind having a few used boxes in stock

Most drivers will buy a used box and sell it on their truck. If it's a masters series box in really good shape, most drivers would give you at least a few grand.

Don't expect near what you paid. I don't care how brand new condition it is, it's a used box. And it's got NASCAR decals on it. That cuts the price by a fair bit.

The only person who will pay a premium for decals is a diehard fan of whatever the decal is.

You're probably asking more than its worth. Post some pics of it and we'll give you an honest assessment of what we think you could get for it.

This! Everything sells when priced correctly.

Actually, there are two reasons something doesn't sell.

First and foremost, it wasn't advertised widely enough and described well enough. One short craigslist with no photos won't always git 'er done.

Second, the asking price is too high and/or the market for the item didn't move the way you hoped.

The DE tool box is akin to those who bought commemorative edition Corvettes or the last Cadillac Eldorado convertibles and sealed them in plastic bags. Twenty-thirty-forty years later, with inflation and lost opportunity cost of the money, plus giving it storage, they're taking a huge loss.

There's one on eBay for $11,000 and he'll have it there a good long while.

The thing with these type of boxes is there were limited numbers made and specific subject matter that only appeals to a certain group and that limits the number of buyers for it. I bought a mustang anniversary box once cause I got a smokin deal on it from the SO dealer not cause I wanted a red box with a bunch of mustangs air brushed on it. Two years later I sold that box for exactly what I paid for it cause my SO dealer had someone looking for one and he knew I would part with mine and it was still in great shape for a two year old box that has seen daily shop use.

Check with your local dealer tell him what you got show him pics and see what he can do for you. He ain’t gonna give you what you want for it if he buys it but he might know an Earnhardt fan who would want it.

Agree for sure. Same goes for getting the best price, you need to find the right audience.

You make a point to specify that it was in a heated basement and never had a tool. To me that and the fact it isnt selling, makes me think you think its going to get a premium because of never being used, and the Earnhardt factor.

Your dealer will likely buy it, but likely no where near what you think its worth. The earhnardt stuff here doesnt carry any premium. Look online for used standard boxes of the same size and series and that'll give you an idea. The fact that its in super-mint condition and earnhardt branded wont add much at all to that number, then deduct 30%(50%?) from that number to get what the dealer will offer you.

If you are trying to get what you paid for it yes it won’t sell. But at a good price that sucker would be bought by someone here in Texas. Also yes it needs to be priced as a used tool box. Also moving it out of a basement will be a deal breaker

I'd consider it but I'm on the wrong coast and shipping would eat it up. Add to that even if it's never had a tool in it, it's still a used box. If I were you I'd put it on eBay, on Craigslist, on anyway possible to get it out there, and sell it for the least you'll take.

Considering that box is almost 20 years old, snap on themselves will have no interest in it. I'm sure a dealer would be give you something for it. I know the exact box you have, I remember when those were new. Those pop up on Ebay from time to time. From what I see more than a few people bought those to sit on those, never used them and then tried to sell them for a pretty penny.

I think the potential buyers of the box are going to fall into two categories:

1. People who want a good box AND are fans of DE/Nascar in general.
2. People who just want a good box and don't care about the decals.

Those are both pretty small groups, and group #2 isn't going to want to spend as much as group #1. Unfortunately I have a feeling that neither are willing to pay more than 50% of what you paid for it when it was new.

Also, my guess is that as time passes you're going to get less people interested in the box simply because less and less of the people in the market for one are even going to know who DE is. I was a kid when he died and I barely remember it.

There's a pawn here here in CT that's fairly local to me...he had one of these in pristine condition a while back. I can make a point to stop there sometime this month

Some dealers will; ALWAYS nice to have used available. I saw a few dealers buy back from lubies; kids lost money, but got that MASSIVE debt off their shoulders. IMO, you will take a hit because of the decals. I see the same stuff on craigslist, weird limited editions that make the seller price them at what a clean triple KRL goes for.

Post pics.

I agree. He's seen enough!
Uses tool market in my area is trash right now too.
Used beat up early 90s Craftsmen box full of rusty chineseium asking 350 to 600 bucks for. It will have some older craftsman wrenches tossed in and maybe a few SK or proto sockets.
Various brands including SK Proto and craftsmen. 450 firm. You cant replace it at this price!
Its always just cheap and junk tools loose in drawers.

Really? I've seen several different types of Snap On Dale Earnhardt boxes.

I will bet money it's the krl 1001/1201 combo black with red trim. It came out shortly before his death so many were still available when he died. I wanted one pretty bad when they were new, but way above my apprentice level pay and skill at the tine.
