Tool Box Color Scheme & Being Slightly **** Retentive :)

Well, I have finally decided that I am going to buy a new 26" roller cabinet so that I can get one of my Craftsman tool chests and middle chests off the workbench. I am not all that impressed by the current Craftsman boxes, however they are good overall and the black/ red color matches perfectly. Right now I can buy a 5 drawer quiet glide cabinet for $203 (MSRP $300) shipped to store.

However I am thinking about going a different direction. Menards sells a series of ball bearing tool chests under the Performax brand. My Dad has a top and middle chest from Performax, and the quality is great and the ball bearing slides are super smooth. Overall I like this box much better and i can get it for essentially the same price.

So here is my question: Would you buy the better box that does't fit with the rest of your boxes, or a box that isnt quite as good but looks great and still serves the purpose? I know it is stupid that stuff like this bugs me but I'm sure I'm not the only one out there .

EDIT: BTW, when I started typing in the tags, I noticed something odd. When I started typing PER (for performax) the top tag that pops up is "perverted smurf". Anybody care to elaborate on that lol

the performax are pretty decent boxes for the money, and the go on sale very regularly and were just marked down quite a bit two weeks ago. the only noticeable difference between the craftsman boxes and the performax are the drawer handles. the performax are large and much nicer/sturdier.

i was going to get the 3 drawer 17" deep middle box for my 26" a while back. i decided to go with a 44"roller instead.

it all depends on if you care if they dont match. if you can handle them not matching, the answer is simple. personally, i would get the performax. you can get a couple cans of spray paint, paint it white, then red, and you can get it to match well. find a craftsman badge, and boom, good to go.

Yeah, the Craftsman is a red body with black drawers, and the performax is black body with stainless drawers.

I just checked out the menards ad and they have the 8 drawer version for $220. I think that is a heck of a deal so I think I'm going to go pick it up. Honestly, I would just go with all performax however I kind of have to keep my current top and middle chest since it was a gift.

I have done quite a bit of painting before, so I think that i'll get the box and make painting the box a project for this fall. I guess I was concerned about the durability of the finish, however the Rustoleum professional seems fairly durable.

rattle can paint can be very durable if you prep like you are painting "for real"

i learned the art of rattle canning when i was a teenager, painting friends race mowers, and other go fast toys... i know one of the mowers still carries my paint job, and it still looks almost wet, over ten years later. wonder if i could get him to send me some pics of it...
