Tool Box Dilema

My old 44" box is getting a bit full as well, I don't have the side cabinets on mine, but I've thought about adding them. Another option would be getting a 2nd box, I already have the top chest on mine. So buying another set may be a good idea, but the 56" and 72" cabinets are looking better all the time. I've had my 44" box for probably over 10 years and it sits outside on a carport, the drawers get a bit stiff to open in the winter but other than that its been and still is a great tool storage setup.

I don't think they make a top chest for the 56 or 72 inch models though which is why I haven't really bothered upgrading.

When I run out of space I'm already pretty well convinced I'll get a 2nd 44. You can't do much better for $700 total if you get them on sale. I do wish it had the deeper drawers like the 56, which I think is a much uglier box with all the chrome molding.

I see 44" boxes on CL frequently for $250-300 and they never seem to be listed long, although I don't know actual selling prices. They're so cheap new that it seems like they hold their value quite well.

None of your options are bad, but the 56" adds depth front to rear, which I think is a huge bonus if your space allows it.

56 adds depth but he kinda has a 60 with what he has now. 44 plus the the side.

Funny, but when I go on the HF site, the 26"., 16 Drawer Glossy Red Roller Cabinet Combo is right there under 'tool chests & cabinets'.

I haven't seen any notices or advertising about them discontinuing them.

Hey CJM585...where in NJ are you that they said HF will not be carrying them any more?

My store is on Rt46 in Parsippany and last I was there they had the 26" Combo.

So Im at a crossroads here.

Ive somehow managed to fill my HF44 and extra side drawer fully up. Reality is if I did organize it slightly better I might find maybe slightly only more storage.

So that leaves me with the following options Ive been pondering:

1. HF 30" red cart. I like it, but feel for the size it is and the fact my tools are in my basement its not really gonna work out well. I say this because it lacks drawer space, and the top is just a catch all really. I could put my sockets in there, but it would get might crowded. After eying it up today at HF the only thing it catches my eye on is price. I spent a few hours the past week looking over the mods people did as well.

At this time Im really leaning towards ruling it out. Also the space it takes up for the storage it provides is a bit much in my current workshop.

2. Top box for the 44 HF. I kinda want to do this, but I also use the top as a workbench. Top box means no more work bench.

3. Another side drawer. Im wondering if Im testing the limits on the casters and also again space. I suppose I could make a frame of angle iron and put casters on it to make sure its happy.

4. The 2 chest 26" box. Looked it over today and Im leaning towards it. Most storage space it seems for the money, will fit well within my space, doesnt use up my bench space of the 44. Downside is cost. It is the most expensive option of the 3. However looking over the drawer config it seems like it would work best. I also feel I could always just use the top chest (was hoping for a scratch and dent while at the store) on my 44" box or whatever.

IDK.. I envision needing more space as time goes on. Currently I have more than a few tools that have no real home and are just laying about in older tool boxes b/c there is no space.

Thoughts O' Wise Garage Journal Gods?

Workbench or flat surface to put **** on. I have 3 workbenches and never had one free because **** would pile up on them. I finally installed garage cabinets to put the clutter away and now have more workbench space than I need.

I was in the east Brunswick store yesterday. They said no local stores had them but Woodbridge had 3

Which is strange. As a few days ago nothing on the site. Wonder if they charged a part number or something. Notice it says in store only though

Ok WTF??? Its there now but I’ll tell you honestly it wasn’t there this morning when I posted. It does say “in store only”.

I wouldn’t believe that price... I’ll seen it cheaper in ads.

Well I just dropped some cash. Went to another store that per the computer had 4 of the 26" red boxes. They checked and they said they actually had 2, an open box one and the floor model. Wouldnt sell me the floor model, which looked eh, top box was really messed on that one. Then they showed me the open box set and it is indeed slightly messed up and I can see why someone took it back.

Top box is slightly bent/off kilter and I felt it wasnt enough to deter me. I can likely straighten it. Lower box seemed fine till I full unpacked it when home, the upper corner on the right was bent in. I straightened it but the paint/powercoat sorta flaked off.

Ill straighten the upper box when I get a chance this weekend and Ill likely put some sorta vinyl wrap or something to cover imperfections of the lower box. But the best part is-I paid a whopping 225 for it. I couldnt pass up the deal. If Im unhappy I can take it back after 5 days to any HF no questions asked.

So eh I think I did ok.
