Hey guys, and gals if there are any here. I really want to buy an American made tool box. And yes I read a lot of the previous threads, and the great write up that is a sticky. I'm in need of a new box cause I have outgrown mine, and I've been shopping around on eBay and Craigslist. And I constantly debate with myself about buying a Mac, Matco or Snap-on box as opposed to a Craftsman, HF, Kobalt. I don't make my living out of my tool box, but for some reason I love the American boxes. That's why I put foamer in the thread title.

So who's bought some of these name brands even though they don't make a living using their tools? And did you do it just to buy American, or was it just a deal you couldn't pass up? I know some Snap-On boxes are made in Canada, and I wouldn't have a problem with that. I dunno, just trying to make conversation about the boxes. I often buy these brands of tools as well, and this isn't a knock to guys who own the foreign boxes, because I like a lot of them.

I bought my original set of Snap On boxes for work and then bought used boxes for home as they cam up. I have Craftsman , SO , Mac , MBC , Williams , and a couple others at home. I've bought them off Craigslist , Ebay , estate sales or where ever. When you see a used one that's reasonable - buy it.

And must be a seldom used code because I've been on the INteRweBs for 15 years and never bumped into that reference before. Maybe its too cool or hipster for old farts to be familiar with. :beer:

For some reason I was picturing some kind of foam product you could put in your tool box drawers to outline and help organize your tools.

The train spotter reference makes sense, but I guess you would have to be a train enthusiast to have heard it before.

Buy the box that makes you happy, I only work on my own toys in my personal garage and I'm on my 2nd Snap on box. After owning several store boxes I bought a KRL 722, loved it but outgrew it, I was speaking with a local SO rep about getting a locker and he happened to have a green 68" Epic that he was looking to move fast, made a deal and got it next day.

I don't think being particular about tool storage is over the top at all.

I just sold a cheap consumer grade Craftsman set that was "good enough" when I bought it because it was clear that I was overloading it, and also the better models have better drawer slides, lock without external lock bars, etc.

If I had the money, I'd definitely have Snappy, Proto, whatever. Also look at Waterloo, they make some nice boxes in price points in between Craftsman and the truck brands. Used to be some of the older Craftsman boxes were made by Waterloo, but I don't think so anymore (except maybe some of the Pro models?)

You would be correct, I am a conductor, and we see rail fans all the time. They don't bother me, but some people refer to them as foamers. I'm like that when it comes to tools, and tool boxes. It's probably in my DNA, my whole fathers side of my family are auto mechanics. I don't mean anything derogatory towards rail fans by any means though.

I think I will hold out, and buy a premium box. I should have the money in a couple months, just gonna pay cash for it. Can you get them cheaper through the truck dealer than what you see on the brand's website?

Cman premium are USA made. Was news to me after brownsfan brought it to our attention. Lifetime warranty. When he stacked some deals through sears, he paid about $1200 with tax and stuff for a 52" top and bottom.

You can definitely get it cheaper than website price, especially if you're interested in something he has on the truck, odds are he got a good deal on it and may be willing to pass on the savings. I don't know about other brands but if you're looking at Snap on, they often have rebates when financed through their credit department. You can pay it off immediately without penalty but doing it that way could save you several hundred, even thousands.

What's your budget ?
What size box?
CL here is full of them, some pretty decent prices.
Couple $100 in shipping? Might get more box shopping beyond local.:dunno:

Train watching is quite a hobby in this country. One town in my county (the largest city in the county, pop 4,100) has a couple of lines passing thru it and a small yard. The city built a parking lot and train watching platform on a high spot near the rails.

The real fanatics keep track of locomotive numbers, car counts, etc.
