Tool box ideas, please!

So I have been looking for a little bigger tool box for my garage, and I stumbled across a clearance rack deal for a kobalt 36” 4 drawer heavy duty top box at Lowe’s. Problem is they had two tops but no matching bottom boxes. I’m looking for ideas on what to do to maximize my budget for a bottom box as well? If I go wider is the extra space worth having on say a Harbor Freight 44”? I currently have an older 26” craftsman box and need the space but I have a 60”x30” rolling work bench in my confined little one car garage that also shares space with golf cart and ride on toys.

Thanks in advance for the help guy!

Might check Lowe’s online for a matching bottom box. I’d imagine you bought a discontinued model

It is. I’ve looked all over locally and item number doesn’t show up online anymore either via website or other search functions. So at this point I’m just trying to come up with a simple yet cost effective alternative to no matching box.

Do you live where Menards has a presence? Look at the Masterforce boxes. They've been excellent for years, and just got better by going to 24" depth. The price is pretty great compared to the competition.

I figured that might be the case. I’m not really much help. I know I would have to buy something that was the same color so it appeared they were matching. Having a bigger bottom box could be good and bad I think the extra space for me would turn into a catch all for random fasteners and bits but could also be nice to have room on one side for charger stations, box of nitrile gloves, or something that would fit.

If you find the right Lowes employee they can pull up that part number, and see if any store in their district has stock. There is no way for them to transfer inventory from store to store. You would have to drive to the location for pick up. Ask for the MOD at customer service. Good luck, they generally do not keep much shelve stock of tool chests, and little if any top stock.

You may wanna try Home Depot

In my search for low cost tool chests I found harbor freight and Home Depot to be the two shining stars in the otherwise over priced or under featured (or both) world of tool chests....

It looks like husky has quite a few 36” or 37” bottom chests for around $250-$400

Although Lowe’s also seems to have other ones around $350 at my local store too... one that has like 4-5 drawers and then a door on the side that opens to the side and has pegboard inside for power tool storage...

There’s also another white one that’s $350 at Lowe’s... the white is really really cool IMHO but as they say your mileage may vary... I’m a white guy so meh

Here’s a husky one .... https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-3...ench-with-Solid-Wood-Top-HMT-305MWB/204184585

And the Kobalt https://m.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-3000-...Stainless-Steel-Tool-Cabinet-Black/1000338711

Another kobalt option that’s a little bigger but a great price https://m.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-3000-...l-Cabinet-Multiple-Colors-Finishes/1000338709

Let us know what you end up choosing and how it looks

Obviously matching the color is going to be hard and you didn’t mention what color yours was (or else I missed it) but, if you don’t care about matching color then those would all be good options... I’m my experience if you can’t get an EXACT match on color, then go with a completely different color so it looks like it was supposed to be that way! You know, like an accent color! Haha just my 2 cents

I spoke with the closest Lowe’s to me and she said there were none within 100 miles each direction, but she didn’t look any further. I’m ok with any options was hoping for as close a match as possible since it is matte black. What’s funny they had a second top box with a drawer that was sticking that I considered buying as well to try and fix the drawer. It was obviously a flor model so I may see if I can find a 36” of something in black.

I also am afraid of it becoming a catch all of I buy the bigger bottom box but I am also thinking of two things right now with that. One do I really have the space to spare right now for a 44”. And 2 do I think for the future and maybe go 44” or bigger. I can make it work if I sacrifice something else.

If You are lacking floor space now, I would rethink getting a bigger box, and make use of wall space for cabinets, shelving, and hanging larger tools.

you would of been best skipping the kobalt unless really was cheap .
a husky 36" top and bottom would of been best size to space option .
To maximise budget you could look at the yukon as coupon rolling on it and it right color .

Starting around Christmas HD has had a 52" box (top & bottom) from Husky for $499. My family got me that for my Christmas present. I have no illusion about it being equivalent of Snap-On or Milwaukee box but the slides are good and it stores a ton of stuff. I would recommend it. I was originally thinking 36" but when i saw this had to have the additional capacity.

Thanks for the replies guys! This is the box I got and yes it was right at $100. Originally $350 I believe. 6fe3b0e5aaf254e223a66a6f06099d93.jpg

I do like the Yukon. I had not seen the one with that many drawers. I thought the only option on that one was with two doors, so I may pursue that. I could very well take the top box back as it has a small dent on the back but I also know in the future I am going to want plenty of boxes in different areas of my new house once complete for different uses.
