Tool box in the house?

Anyone here have a toolbox/chest/cabinet in their spare room in the house? If so, can post pics? Any issues with the weight of the setup in the house? Back in the day I had a Snap-On top and bottom box in a spare room. Was their smaller 26" box. These days I am thinking about a 44" for the hobby room.
Thanks!

This is something I should have done earlier, and am putting together a house box.

The thing that made me realize I should have a box inside was when I was traveling back east. The people staying at my house needed a screwdriver for something house related, and my shop was locked up tight.

A box with lower end/consumable tools in my situation is perfect. But if you’re married, or live alone, a higher end box/tools would be perfect. Less chance of “walk-aways”....

I have a 26" Craftsman/Snap-On stack in my laundry room. It keeps all the tools I need around the house just fine.

When I was still living at my mom's house, I kept that same toolbox in my bedroom.

A buddy has a SO KRSC46 cart in his living room, keeps all his model railroad and 3D printer tools in it. He's single...

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight, unless your house isn't up to code or something. How many tools do you plan on keeping in it?

I have a full stack Milwaukee rolling packout in the spare bedroom that is loaded with household fixit tools. Keeps me from walking a few feet out into the workshop. I use two Kobalt SS toolboxes in the kitchen. And I have a HF tool cart in the laundry room to hold clothes baskets on top and batteries, etc in the drawers. Luckily they blend in well and my wife is cool with all this.

I have two - a craftsman box in the laundry room for household projects and another box stocked with smaller tools for guitar/instrument repair.

My wife's tool box is an open plastic shoe box.

My small computer tools are just in a plastic box.

I’m currently renting a one bedroom luxury apartment and have two, 26” Craftsman chests in the large walk-in closet. I’m also on the top floor. One is 10 years old and spent some time in the garage, the other is brand new.

I don’t really have anything to work on these days unless I travel an hour to my parents and use the pole barn. Most of the time, I just use whatever tools my father has.

This is kinda what happens when you’re divorced, work in Pharmaceuticals and drive newer cars with factory warranties. I have all of these tools and nothing to use them on. It is what it is.

I have a 26in 3 drawer Craftsman mid box in one of the bottom cabinets in the kitchen. It's perfect for quick around the house jobs and has screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, adjustable wrench, pipe wrench, hammer, level, etc. I use tools out of it all the time instead of going down to the garage. My wife loves it too as there are always quick access tools if the need occurs.

Edit - I realized I actually have 4 toolboxes in the house. The one noted above, a 26in roll cab as my desk drawers in my office, a 26in 2 drawer mid box for my wife's craft punches and a mini snap on box in our bathroom (doesn't really count but funny).

I would be lying if I didn't think time to time of taking a box and build it into a cabinet and give it proper drawer faces and interior lining so it aesthetically doesn't look out of place but is drastically functionally superior to any actual commercially offered kitchen cabinet base. Leave the casters on and put a top on it and you got a mobile island :lol_hitti

forget all the labor with making wood faces etc. Just find a wood grain vinyl film that comes close to matching, and wrap the ******.

My big box is is in my bedroom. Since I don’t work in a hanga anymorer, I don’t have anywhere to put it at work. I have a small box with the tools I need for most jobs that fits in the tool room under the terminal. Since I live on the ground level floor, it was pretty easy bringing it in. I have about 700 lbs of tools in it and it probably weighs 300lbs empty, I haven’t had any issues rolling it around and on the carpet if I need to move it somewhere else.

I've got this old tool cabinet that I placed a vintage oil pump on in my home office.

The bottom is full of old motorcycle books, some vintage tools and The Antique Motorcycle Club of America magazine back issues.

Tool boxes are cool to look at and can hold a lot of stuff...even your under wear and T-shirts. :)

When I used to live in an apartment, I had no choice but to store my tools in the spare bedroom of my two bedroom apartment. I turned that room into a mini-workshop of sorts. I had a 26 inch craftsman top and bottom combo and one HF 5 drawer cart in the room that held the majority of my tools. The room was carpeted, so I purchased cheap plywood and covered the entire floor so I wouldn't mess it up.

I also ringed to room with vertical storage shelves and had a small work bench made from an old computer desk with my vise mounted to it. The closet normally reserved for clothes held all my portable toolboxes that I stored specialty tools in. I also hung my clamps and ac manifold from the rod normally reserved for clothes. The floor jack also resided in that closet along with my jack stands.

Ohh..And that was all in an UPSTAIRS apartment. When I moved a while back, it sucked bringing all of that down.:lol_hitti

It didn't seem like it was hard to bring up there. But I was in that place for 10 years and the collection just built up over time. So glad I have a workshop now and additional storage to house all of that. The only way that room worked out for me was I made sure to go vertical with all of my storage. The racks helped my organization a ton and allowed me space to move about.

I have one of the black Husky 46" tool chests in my office/electronics/hobby room. I'll probably put a 2nd one in that room when I move to a bigger house, I just love how much usable and efficient storage there is in a standard tool chest.

I currently live in a 1 story slab on grade house - so no issues with loads or anything like that. The chest weighs 220lbs empty. I don't have it full of wrenches and sockets so it probably weighs less than 400lbs. Not any worse than a couch or sofa with 2 people on it.

I have a large 2 drawer box in the pantry I built. That way I can store things and still keep it out of site. Works great.

I also have a Husky 46 inch in the spare bedroom. I put two layers of cardboard under the wheels to help distribute the weight and not mar the wood floors. The wife doesn't like the look of the cardboard.

The box and the treadmill get along just fine.

I've got several stackable tool chests in my living room. They will all eventually go into the garage/workshop when it's built, as my current 1 car garage doesn't have room for everything.

Cardboard under the wheels too :D

I do like having a tool chest in the house though, I'll probably keep one of them inside.

I moved from a smallish house with a three-car garage and two old shop buildings -- all kind of junky but usable -- to a bigger house with only a carport. So now all of my toolboxes are in the "old" living room:

I just bought the HF top box that's on the floor but it's surprisingly heavy so I'm going to drag a pal over to help me put it on the bottom box. The house was built around 1960 and added on to in the 1980s, so what was once the main living room is now superfluous. It's a slab house so no worries about floor load. It also has a utility room and I have a work bench in there, but it's usually buried in laundry -- too close to the washer & dryer!

I keep a cantilevered Hazet caddy box in the house with house tools. Hammer, pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, laser level, tape measure, putty knife, etc.

I don't want to give up more real estate to storage in San Francisco, where a 26" stack need $4,000 worth of square footage.

I've got a buddy whose got all his kitchenware in one of those massive stainless steel Costco boxes in his kitchen. Needless to say the marriage didn't work out.

Only keeping 2 screwdrivers and a wire cutter in a drawer for changing batteries and so on. Bigger 'jobs' need a walk to the garage and back...

I have a Craftsman chest in the basement with a 180 piece socket set. Also my 18v Makita with a weak battery pack. Wife and kids have free reign with those tools. Hands off my shop tools. If something comes up missing from the house box I don't sweat it, but whoever used it last will pay to replace lost tools. So far, no issues.

Have (5) 59" Vidmars, (5) smaller Vidmars on my first floor, temporary. Only one is for my general use. Basically I have most of my materials I need for living in one. Have medicines, chemicals, electric, plumbing, personal papers, hardware, etc. in a 59" cabinet. The others are there until I move. Single so I get away with it. Even if I had a family I would have a cabinet in the living space, as it holds just about all small items you need in a household contained in one area.
