they arent the best quality, but at the price point there is NOTHING out there that will touch them. harbor freight really needs to step up and offer it in black, even if the price is higher, i think they will gain more customers

And adding a second full width drawer. I'd bet that 1 more of those replacing one from each bank would actually make it both more desirable and cheaper.

I thought about that Husky set, but it's larger than the HF 44, but lighter. That concerned me as to the strength of the unit.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Keep the ideas coming.

Coach

I own this set, and have it loaded down with at least the rated capacity, if not more. It's a GREAT home shop box, but definitely not a professional shop box. I'm in my garage working on stuff an average of 4hrs a day, 6 days a week. The build on the box might be a touch light, but for the price it cannot be beat. I considered buying a second one for my shop.

A buddy of mine, tried it out, and decided it was a bit too lightweight for his shop. Ironically, he works in his garage far less than I do. Between the two of us, his place is more 'man cave' hangout spot, where mine is more 'grinder bits flying' working shop.

You can't go wrong with the HF44 boxes, but I also think _at the price_, you cannot go wrong with the Home Depot box linked above.

30" is generally reserved for the really high-end boxes. Your average 54" KRL is 24". Most homeowner/hobby boxes are 18"

Sorry,29"...my "homeowner/hobby box" is a KRL1022 and is 29"
But like I said @ $1000,that is going to be tough to find.

Agreed, the Pro stuff is nice and the 21" depth is sweet. But +$300 is theoretically a 30% increase in budget. It's fun spending Coach's money though :bounce:

That's only if he wants the top box as well. But yes it's always fun spending someone else's money. Lol. But seriously these new Pro Series boxes are not even in the same league as the HF and price reflects that

I would go with the 44. the 26 is kinda crapulent and has REALLY shallow drawers with a 50 lb. capacity. Plus, every time I see the 26 in-store, the display unit has been mangled in some way. Usually involving bent drawers. Oh, and the drawer latches **** on the 26, because they won't stay closed on the display models (not just on bent drawers.)

Thanks again for all the feedback. This purchase isn't just to cut our taxes. it is something I need. I just want to expense it on the current year. We are doing several other things for the current year's tax purposes as well.

I'm still leaning toward the 44. I'm not a pro tech and, once put in place, it will rarely be moved. I have looked at a bunch of other boxes and the only other one that I really liked for the money was this one.

It is 8" longer than I planned on, but I could probably make it fit. Any opinions on it?

My Frontier is 39" between the wheel wells. Does anyone know if the crates for the 44 would fit in that space is placed parallel to the truck?

Both the hf 44" or that husky 52" are good choices at the offer prices, Husky has way more storage and 2" extra depth. Just choose what works for you in terms of drawer layout and what most important factor to you out of size vs storage space needed .

I don't think black would cost more.. I work for a company and our fleet is red and we pay a little more for the paint job then others the painter said it's because red paint cost more.. So I don't know if he is taking our company for a ride or if it's true...

The Harbor Freight is a better box then a Husky.. Just my opinion..

^ it feels little more rigid but does depth and drawer layout work for you ?
Husky slides seem better to me and drawers closed seem align better .
I quite like the 44" hf as drawer layout about right for small chest, it just drawer usable depth of 16½" is pain on tool layout . All down to what user putting in it and available floor space. hf has easy upgrade with side hang cabinet which super cheap and always available plus as OP pretty keen on 44" size limit so it seems obvious choice due to size and budget plus easy collect and warranty if need exchange seems reasonably good.

I took a quick look at the husky in your link recently. The drawers are very stiff to pull on the first inch or so. I found this very annoying but I`m an old style tool box guy. Box is probably worth a look to compare to the HF unit. Someone said Home Depot is matching the 11% rebate that Menards and Lowes has going on.

They better when have weight in them. Do close nice and seem pull in even both ends.
Things I don't like about either boxes but at prices and size option to OP requirements they about best of the low cost end, hf drawers work well with more mechanical or machinist type needs the husky is designed towards power tools and battery charge deck. Op needs kick the castors and pull the trigger .

Damn Coach still oversize at 52" length but literally half of your budget:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-52...l-Cabinet-Set-Black-HTC5206-HMT5212/205431577

If a local store has 'em in stock you could at least go kick the tir.....er casters

I handled this one today at my local store. Honestly, I was impressed. It felt far better than I expected. The drawers didn't feel overly light and they didn't slop side to side when fully open. Each drawer has a "Husky" embossed liner in it, which is a nice touch. The drawers are actually 15.75" inside.

I'm mostly comparing it to a lower 32" cabinet I bought a couple years ago. That thing is pretty damn flimsy and the drawers are only 15". But this 52" linked above surprised me. I'm not saying it's the best damn thing ever, just better than expected.

Okay guys, I know you haven't been able to sleep wondering what I decided to do. I did look on Craigslist. There were 4 or 5 boxes starting at around $1500 and going up so that was out. Closest HD is in Fayetteville and they don't have anything but small boxes on display.

So I went to HF and got the 44. When we went in, my wife looked at the boxes and said "Why don't you get that bigger one?" pointing to the 56. I told her I would like to but space was a limiting factor. Then she said "Well, get one of those things hanging on the side then." meaning the 18 inch end cabinet. So I did, but it is going to sit on one of my work benches until I can clear more space in the garage.

We put the 18" in our van and the chest and top box in the back of my Frontier. There aren't any good ways to tie the 44 crate down as it was standing up and parallel to the bed. About 10 miles down the road, I stopped and laid the crate over on its side. It fit perfectly between the wheel wells.

The rest of the 40 miles home was easy. My wife and I unloaded all of it. I lifted one end of the 44 and she pulled the pallet out from under it then I rolled it inside and put in place. The two of us lifted the top chest off its pallet and carried it from outside and put it on top of the bottom box.

The first time I opened each drawer, the were tight but easy after that.

Also, it all goes on the 2016 tax year, including both our mileage, so I am happy.

Tomorrow I'll start rearranging my tools and moving things from open shelves to this box or one of my others.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I do appreciate it.
