Let me see if I can confuse everyone.
In the til of my service cart, Metric sockets go on the left and the few SAE sockets go on the right side as looking down. They are separated by air ratchets, impact wrenches. The Torx bits are on the inboard side on the SAE stuff.
As for wrenches, I only have a few SAE on my cart so, the left side is metric, and the right side is SAE.
In my main box. I have my sockets separated the same way with all metric on the left and SAE on the right separarted by drive tools in the middile of a full width drawer on a Cornwell 60 incah cart.
Wrenches get their own drawers.
At work we also have a large Snap on box. That box is set up with wrenches having separate drawers. However, the sockets are stored by drive size. For example, all the 3/8 drive chrome sockets are put in a drawer with metric on the left, drive tools and extensions in the middle, specialty stuff like torx, and then sae on the right. 1/4 and 1/2 chrome are organized the same way.
Impact sockets are in a deeper drawer that is deep enough for the 1/2 drive axle nut sockets to stand up in with metric on the left and SAE on the right. Impact extensions are in the middle.

You have to keep those commie tools far away from the American ones or you will have toolbox anarchy.

To me it's a matter of making the best use of space - right now my Dad's box is all the metric in one drawer, and 4 drawers for all of the SAE stuff and ratchets, drive handles, etc. It works because it makes efficient use of the space. For my stuff, I have more of a split by type of tool, although I'll be looking to reorganize at some point.

For sockets one point is that if you do split metric / SAE sockets in separate drawers, where do the ratchets, extensions, etc. get put? If you've got lots of duplicates it might make sense having some of that with both sets, or having a separate drawer for that stuff. Or it might make more sense to organize with one drawer for each drive size. As a hobbyist, I tend to work out of the toolbox, and it can be a pain switching drawers to grab different socket then different ratchet then different extension...

Metric wrenches in their own drawer, SAE wrenches in their own drawer, All sockets in top of the top chest, metric on left, SAE on right. Ratchets, extensions and breaker bars in full size drawer by themselves.

I works for me.

As others said, wrenches w/ wrenches..sockets w/ sockets. All my vehicles use metric, but the house and my friends truck are all SAE.
