Tool box paint help

I have a large file cabinet that need to be repainted, and want some recommendations on paint to use.

I'm thinking of firing up the compressor and mixing some paint for my rarely used spray gun.

I've purchase auto paint from NAPA and Sherwin Williams in the past, and had good results. But I think I want something more durable, like an appliance enamel for the file cabinet. And I may try to paint a small tool box with the same paint.

So what kind of paint, and where is a good place to get it?

I've had good luck with Rustoleum Enamel that is sold by the quart or gallon at Home Depot. I've rolled my cabinets but I understand you can thin this paint and it's very durable. Around $9.00 a quart.

Anybody paint with something other than rustoleum?

I know it can provide good resutls, but I've been told that when trying to paint over rustoleum later down the road it can be a problem. Maybe I was mis-informed, but I was told if I ever wanted to paint it again, I'd have to strip it to bare metal if I wanted to use another brand.

Actually, in this case yes.

I have found that used file cabinets, especially the legal size ones, work great in the garage to store larger bulky tools (circular saws, grinders) that would otherwise clutter shelves.

And unlike used toolboxes, used filing cabinets are cheap!

In my craigs-list neighborhood you can get 4 or 5 drawer, full extension, 25-28" deep drawers for $20-50. They may have some bangs bumps and scratches at that price, but so does about everything else in my garage.

The one I want to paint has a big rusty spot on the top where someone probably had a plant, and I've got an old hand toolbox that's also been waiting its turn for paint, so maybe I'll try to do them together.

File cabinets don't replace a flat drawer toolbox, but I've found them to be a nice addition to one.

So Tlag, what did you decide? I just picked up a five-drawer file cabinet from the neighbor that's moving and I would like to paint it to match my Craftsman roll-away. Can I get a decent paintjob with a rattle can?

A 2k urethane is about the most durable paint on the market. You can get pre mixed, factory packaged colors from DuPont Nason, PPG Shop line or even online places such as TCPglobal for around $60 a quart.
2K Urethane is a two component, single stage paint used for automotive and fleet refinishing.

You can get acrylic enamel for a little cheaper and as long as you use a catalyst it will be more durable then rustolum or and rattle can junk.
