I know there are a lot of tool box threads... Looking to equip my new garage/shop. Looking for a good basic box with casters that's a good value.
Don't need top of the line but want something that will last and work well for basic home use.

Agreed, harbor freight. The 44" has had a strong following for years now, and it appears they only have gotten better (with a slight price increase).

I’ve had my US General for a couple of years now.

As a weekend hobbyist, it’s been really a nice setup. I hav a 72” bottom, 56” upper, side locker and a set of drawers.

I’m very happy, and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again.

Myself not looking at high end cause I just don't have those deep pockets. But two yrs ago I purchase my first US General lower section which was on sale and have no regrets. Well beginning of Nov they put out the anything coupon and I purchase the upper section. Both to me is well worth the money even if it was not on sale. Can't beat price, but was told here on GJ that those cabinets needs to seat on level ground or say on blocks then all would be good.

I have a HF five drawer cart, a Kobalt, Husky, and a couple of Craftsman boxes in various locations. All do the job for a hobbiest, but the drawer latches on the HF cart ****, so I would put it at the bottom of the list for that reason alone.

Again, the HF 44" boxes are a decent buy for the money. I put one in the race trailer as part of the workbench.

I'd have no issue buying one to equip a home shop or building a Steeve-O style bench. I'd have no issue getting a Masterforce box from Menard's either.

True be told, my choice for a new box would be one or the other.

Thanks for all the feedback. Wife saw a sale on Husky 46" with top box for $500. HF 44" bottom is $449 , top is $299. Was surprised to see the top box weight listed as 191 lbs - seems like a lot but perhaps I am just used to smaller, cheaper, thinner stuff. I don't want to cheap out on this and have to fight the drawers and such. Menards has a Masterforce 46" lower section for $769 - a lot more than 20% above HF. I see I can get some add on end sections from HF but by the time I add those I might just go for a 72" although for ease of moving them around two of the 44" might make more sense. I don't think I have a current coupon - will have to look around. Can I combine a coupon with the black Friday sale?

Also see they have drawer organizers...

When I was still in High School working in a shop. I asked an "Old Timer" whose opinion I respected about what first tool box I should buy.

His advice "Buy the biggest tool box you can afford; you will fill it up eventually". Time has proven him to be right.

Another happy US General 44 owner. Drawer layout and drawer depths work well for me. The shallow drawers are JUST deep enough for my M12 tools. I'd buy it again for sure.

If you have all three stores local to you, I'd suggest checking each one out in person and seeing which you like best and measure drawer depths to see how your tools will fit

Most 20% off coupons are not eligible for US General boxes at HF. Read the fine print on the coupon, it'll tell what you can't use it on. Break out the magnifying glass or zoom your phone's camera to read it.

Check out the craftsman line at lowes, I just bought a 5 drawer 2000 series to mount a buffer on & the build quality is pretty good, plus made in USA. What I really like are the soft close slides, very smooth & the fit & finish seems real nice.

I recently bought some Husky boxes from Home Depot, and I'm rather happy with them. 24" deep, soft close drawers, and I really like the drawer layout.

The standard duty Husky boxes are fine for most home uses. If you plan on loading up the drawers with heavy tools (sockets, wrenches, etc) you probably want to step up to their heavier duty boxes (the matte finish ones).

I have the HF 44" at home and the Masterforce at work (MF is 5 years older than my HF, not sure if that's changed). HF is def. thicker metal, drawers are smoother, but the latching is so so.

I'd base it on layout personally. Assess what tools you have (or wish you had too) and make sure drawer heights can accommodate. I'd hate to have to put tools in the bottom drawers because I chose the wrong box. I wouldn't pinch pennies over convivence in this situation.

Looks like home delivery is the only option for the HF box at about $100. Menards I could pick up at the store for no shipping. Still a reasonable price compared to others, just something to keep in mind. Will have to check the options for HD and Lowes.

I just bought the Harbor Freight 44" US General Gen 2. It's a solid unit and still probably the best value for the money. Drawers slide smoothly with double-slides on larger drawers. Zero complaints on the fit-n-finish. I'd you are patient, you can find the bottom chest on sale for $350, and the top box for $250. Hard to beat $600+tax for any box this size. I'd skip any of the stuff at Lowes/HD as it just doesn't compare to the US General boxes. I don't have any Menards nearby, so I can't speak to that one. I do like that the HF box is modular so that I can add a side cabinet or box if I need extra space.

Ive noticed the boxes at lowes are really thin and flexible. The spot welding really deforms the panels..its nice they are usa made but not if they are junk. my old 90s c-man box is much nicer.

which boxes let you pull a fully loaded drawer out by holding only the extreme side with no problem?

I've had no issues pulling out the 44" US General drawers no matter what side I pull on. Specifically the full length deep drawer on the bottom chest which I have packed full of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 socket sets with breaker bars, torque wrenches, extensions, and ratchets. Granted the unit I have is only a few months old, so I can't attest to long term function, but it works just fine so far. The single slide top box drawers with combo wrenches or various pliers/tin snips seem to glide without issue as well, but obviously at much reduced weight compared to the socket drawer.

My kids picked me up this Husky box from Home Depot for Christmas ( They had a hard time hiding it ) I have not messed with it yet but I know it is heavy and It appears to be well made. I hope that the finish holds up as I do notice some chips. I have had a old Craftsman box and side locker that I had gotten for Christmas in the Mid 90's and honestly besides out growing it years ago it has held up very well.

Here is a great site to use if you are not a HF club member, heck even if you are a IT member I recommend it. Just enter in the SKU number and it will pull up any current coupons for that SKU. Another nice feature is it shows you expired coupons so you can see what they typically go on sale for.

Its good to know the Menards are worth looking at. This is some competition which despite what people think HF brings. I mean its so sad Sears took a dive but ****,,, now others are trying to catch up to HF. They can sell some at a higher price even if they improve them a little. I got nothing against big brand boxes but for this kind of stuff it takes a lot of pain out of it. This guy isnt working in a heavy truck shop. He will never wear out todays econo box.
I was all fired up to get something more prestigious to promote my lofty position but got over it with a little drawer moving which gave me a little satisfaction.
Would likely help to spray some stuff on the slides, what would be the right thing? I dont use the drawers a lot, they dont need latches.

I paid 75 for it 25+ years ago when I needed it. I figured I was going to upgrade at some point but never did and it didnt matter after a while. I was gonna snag a deal along the way. That is something that delayed a hoist, was gonna snag the deal and finally had to buy new and I really didnt wanna be working on it anyway.
A deal never popped up on a box. I got nothing against top tier but the econo options are now good and cheaper than ever, paid 650 for a setup in 81 you can get for 750 today and its better. The econo option is good for buy it now, get past it. I would consider a used truck box if it fell in to my lap but I aint gonna start a world wide search for one.

I'll jump on the HF wagon. I bought two stacks a little while back, both Series 2. 26" top/bottom for my lake house garage, and a 44" top/bottom for my son. Got everything for a bit over $1100. Get the HF credit card, and they'll take 10% off your entire first purchase. Exactly what I did, along with a few other store savings.

y4mFQFBTy2ne7ErVoZrM4o7__sEmMRZY9EPrI-UcDdTqr2_tY5ZvJrjxeJ7yx4PQ7lSv4wDsfj65UkUZGahIwGlxiBvwdd1ctueA_gM9AotnRjDV0hjidUVPfqNhUQmnw2jKzWhVc3dfOXvQVmhOiAxTpYxmuIpphdfIACMsJDluHiP-7MDNGEp34hmeRvk9kUD

I painted the drawer inserts black (they were white), to contrast with the orange paint. Just cheap gloss rattlecan paint from Tractor Supply. I'm not totally pleased with the drawer design (I would like one more medium-deep drawer on the bottom), but for what I'm using it for, it holds everything in a somewhat organized fashion.

My son's 44" model is a beast. Very heavy. We may add/upgrade two of the upper drawers to double slides:

I would do most of this different today if I had to do it again. I would be poised to strike with the credit card at HF and Menards, let them keep most stuff till I needed it, would be prepared a little ahead to shop and use more from the generic from the parts stores when needed which I have done especially ahead of newer markets.
I never got anything ATD or NAPA that didnt work and work wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than we expected at the time. Used to have to spend 4 to 8$ to get as good a screwdriver HF now has for 1.50. I wouldnt buy a Hilti today, would probably start HF and work my way up in the event I needed it regular but that **** wasnt everywhere in the day and we had used it at work so its what we knew.
I would buy expensive chrome hand tools either,,,, to much for 10% the price and makes it so much easier to afford, to get in hand when needed, so cheap the price is nearly disposable and with a bit of looking, really minor can get so good and so cheap its not worth the worry,,,, the care,,, the insurance, the exposure tpo loss,,,,, all or most of that can go away, no one breaks in to steal HF, no lawyer wants it, no finance, not much loss in the event of loss, those 11mm sockets in every set dont eat much, the pieces you never use become irrelevant vs 20$ you spent 40 yrs ago sitting on a peg in the box.
I spend 13$ at Walmart for metric bits 20 yrs ago for a job and still use them regular, probably buy them for less and better today.
We get a lot opinions here from guys retired and still buying new ****. A lot of the stuff we bought as stop gap or alternative or viewed as disposable has blended its way in and we dont even think of where its made or the cost till we get here.
Today would be looking as so much rather generic just before they hit it with that semi brand stamp and look whjer the 2$ can opener at Walmarts is the same as the 7$ one they change the grip on and wrap it in a package, can see it went thru the same machine. They got 89 cents for the cheapest, that is the true used once and the 3, 4 $ ones aint the same but the generic 2 and the brand 7 are the same.

Personally if I was Joe Job, Joe Homeowner, Joe Burb would be looking to take care of my big ticket items to save a lot. The price of so much has gone so down and even injthe used market that it doesnt take much repair to be on the up side if a guy doesnt have to invest a lifetime of tools. Modern wrench set now can pay in a single event. No reason to do without, scrimp and save for some prize possession or make payments on it.
Be different if someone was giving it to me. He wants to back the truck to the door and toss it all off and say see ya ok but I aint chasing it down with 100$ bills taped to my forehead so I can grab with both hands. I went thru this when I was 20 and wanted beer and broad money, said I could do that part with Sears at the time and its sooooo much better today. Walmart has brought the whole world to our neighborhood, can buy a Channelock for 14$, can toss coffee in the same cart. For more custom taste the net is the place to shop and Joe local has the Channelock on the shelf for 28 has to find something else to sell.
I do a lot of local and try to but some of it is so difficult its hard to. We had some local hardware types were nice enough but looking back were rather heartless and not all that helpful.

A bud of mine truck shopped for 35 years and recently stumbled in to a HF, walked out with a big set of boxes and giggles every time he opens a drawer. Says,,, muy last one was 6500,,, this is 650 and it works flawless.
Whats so amazing is the work, we are paying retail of course but anyone ever built much a simple tool box, painted it can appreciate all that work for that little price. Even if the materials were free a worker in this country couldnt afford to make it himself.

Another mostly satisfied 44” US General owner here. Works great for 99% of the tools only complaint is I’d like to have another mid depth half drawer for my pliers. I have them laid flat in multiple drawers, I’d rather be able to hold them all in a single drawer in a plier rack of some sort.

I have a Husky set, I believe 46" (?) top and bottom and have been very happy with it. It has ball bearing slides, soft close and nice large drawer pulls.

At work, for our assembly stations I purchased Homak boxes. These are fairly reasonable as well and I think my be built just a bit tougher than the Husky boxes. We purchased 4 of these, 10 years ago and our team is in and out of the drawers several times a day every work day and not one issue.

The reason for my personal use that I went with Husky is around Christmas (not sure if it was before or after), they had a HUGE price drop on their boxes and for the price I couldn't pass it up.

If pricing was the same, I think I would stick with Homak just because I know how well they have held up in our small manufacturing facility.

Really glad I ordered the 44" US Gen. a few weeks back after reading this thread!
You won't be disappointed. I ordered mine in black, so I had to wait about a month for the bottom box. The top chest came in a few weeks. Liners all fit perfectly. I have the matching black magnetic paper towel holder and nitrile glove dispenser, too. Only thing I may add down the line is the side locker, but we'll see how quickly I fill up this one as-is.

I went to HF set on buying a 44" US General, but ended up with the Yukon 46" after seeing one in person. It is sturdier than the Husky 46" (rivnuts instead of spot-welded tabs, better coating job, dual slides vs single on the deep drawers, etc) and $150 less than the USG. Peanuts, really, but couldn't justify more for the light duty use it will see with my motorcycle and home maintenance jobs.
