Tool Box To Tall

I have a Craftsman premium 8 Drawer chest w/ 3 drawer Intermedaite and a 5 drawer Rollaway. I can't see in the the top!
I am thinkin about removing the casters and just setting it on a couple flat boards.

ANy one else have this problem?

Well, it sounds like you are gonna have to get yourself one of those little step stools some mechanics have to peer into the top of their boxes!

Better to go up and have to use a step stool than to take up double the wall space! Well, unless you're lucky enough to have a huge garage.

Get ya some of them drywall stilts! Or...put the center box on a bench or shelf next to the rollaway.

Can't say that I have that problem at 6'5". Would it help if you went to a smaller diameter wheel? The wheels on my roller cabinet must be 6 inches tall. I don't roll mine around much but I'd hate to loose that option.....

I worked with a guy with the same setup. He was pretty tall, and even he had to kinda peek over the top. He loved it though because the box was such a great price. When I needed something outta the top, being 5'7" I just reached and felt around. If it was something small, I would do the jump and locate. LMAO.

I would say just go to K-mart and pick up a little plastic step stool. Light weight, you can kick it around.

I think removing the casters has gotta be a pain in the ****. Especially when you decide you want to move it, or something falls behind it.

Remove the middle box and set it on your bench.

I took off the 6 inch casters and installed 2 inch casters (rated at 200lbs) my box is 56 wide so it had 4 casters and two fixed wheels. I installed 6 casters which allows me to pull the box straight out from the wall if needed. I also took some 1x2 boards and closed in the front and sides beneath the box which keeps things from finding their way under the box. If I need to move the box for some reason I just pull out the boards and the box pulls straight out from the wall.

We have a couple of homemade stands at the shop. Really great for the tops of tall toolboxes, and for working on those tall vehicles. All made out of 2x4 scraps.

I have a similar probem but I don't have an intermediate box, I'm 5'-6" I just keep a bucket nearby to stand on

How about cutting a 2x12 the width of the box. Then notch it a bit on the corners to fit under the box and between the wheels to hold it in place. Then you could double or triple up the 2x12 to get some height. This way it would stay in place, be fairly secure to step on and not stick out too far that it hinders you looking through the other drawers.

I had to build a step for the bodyshop owner (5'6") so he could see what was in the top of Mt trashmore (the top of his box) , I'M 6'4" and have a hard time seeing in the top of my box . I put a car rearveiw mirror on the lid so I can see whats up there after grabbing a live mouse one day ....

One other suggestion... I've seen for things like tablesaws and such: A frame that the tablesaw sits on, with the wheels outside the frame of the saw. This allows the frame that the saw is sitting on to be lower than the top of the caster wheels. In fact, while searching the web for a sample image I found this one, which is actually for moving pianos, but is I think a decent size to get the idea
