Tool box top to bottom

I currently moving stuff around in my top and bottom 42" International.

What order do you have your boxes from top to bottom?

Mine currently is
Top box
sockets, ratchets and extensions (top under the lid)
standard wrenches (1st drawer)
Metric wrenches (2nd drawer)
Screwdrivers (3rd drawer)
Pliers and crescent wrenches (4th drawer)

Bottom
Empty

precision tools (what I have that is....) and levels are in cupboards overhead but thinking I want them in the top drawer of the bottom box.

I want to put mostly hand tools, air and cordless tools into this box set.
Prybars are gonna hang off the side of the big box.

Hammers and clamps, vice grips, grinders are in the welder table box.

you might want to plant some weight in the bottom box, somewhere or bind it to a wall, so it does not get top heavy and fall.

The narrow depth boxes are really prone to this.

Been there done that.

This one is not gonna move Around much In this small garage. Top and bottom are bolted together. Worse case scenario, all hammers and clamps can go to the bottom drawers.

Narrow 1 - Screw drivers and flies, picks
Narrow 2 - Measuring, torque wrenches

Medium 1 - Brake line flaring kits and brake line tools

Center section

Narrow 1 - Pliers
Narrow 2 - Misc, quick disconnects, belt tools, scrapers mirrors
Narrow 3 - Hammering and beating drawer. Hammers, punches, pry/line-up bars, extra air hammer bits
Medium 1 - Compression leakdown and vacuum gauges, Bearing driver disc set
Medium 2 - Ball joint kit, and extra adapter kit, spring compressors, custom u- joint hammering bits
Bottom - Coolant pressure tester (full kit), drill doctor.


Right section

Narrow 1 - My keys and paper work, warranty claims, odds and ends.
Narrow 2 - More pliers, snap ring and coolant specialty
Narrow 3 - Heli-coil, broken fastener removal (turbo sockets in main socket drawer), good taps/dies, carbide burs.
Medium 1 - Main use pullers
Medium 2 - Slide hammer and adapters, u joint puller
Bottom - Scanners and boroscope

Sits on left side of KRL

Left 1 - pens and marking tools, batteries
Left 2 - misc

Center 1 - Eye protection
Center 2 - Glues and epoxys, razor blades

Right 1 - misc
Right 2 - misc

Full length 1 - Zip ties and plastic mounting hardware.
Full length 2 - Empty
Full length 3 - Spare parts for my quad

Top box currently empty, aside from air/hydro fittings drawer. Gotta buy a new lock cyl.

Bottom box

Narrow 1 - metric/sae tap/die sets (cheaper ones), specialty drum brake tools
Narrow 2 - Electrical crimping and repair tools
Narrow 3 - Electrical test leads/probes and spare wire for repairs

Medium 1 - Multi-meter, power probe, more common leads/adapters
Medium 2 - Pass through ratchet sets, dial indicator
Medium 3 - Bearing driver and seal installer set, lock out sockets for 4wd.

Deep - ****** generic fuel pressure tester, c-clamps

Most of the time I work out of the cart: Mines red, and branded Montazuma

Top lid area - 1/2 impact, deep shallow and 2 sets of wobbles, 3/8 chrome and impact in deep, semi-deep and shallow, Snap on low profile, impact and chrome universals. Ratchets and extensions, screwdrivers and pry-bars in the side holes. Torx and hex bits

Drawer 1 - 1/4 drive deep, shallow, semi deep, magnetic, low profile, and 6 point spline. Torx, hex bits, universals impact and chrome, extensions and ratchets. M12 ratchet (1/4) and M12 impact driver. Pliers

Drawer 2 - Wrenches, 1/2 drive ratchets

Drawer 3 - Air tools

Drawer 4 - Belt tool, punches, axle nut sockets, pipe wrench and vice grips

Drawer 5 - VERY misc. Connector tools, drum tools, jump leads, so much random (useful) stuff.

Bottom - Brake depressors and wind back tools, torque wrench, air gauge.

I've always arranged my box (s) by having the most used tools at waist high to chest high. The higher and lower drawers are the lesser used items. A tune-up guy, an alignment guy, a machinist, a general mechanic and one with wood working tools are all going to arrange things different. Making a living out of a tool box vs home storage of tools and supplies are different. A 6'5" tall guy is going to arrange his differently than a 5'6".

In other words you have to do what is right for you, there is no universal standard.

Top shelf is dedicated bags/ boxes. Electirical, Brakes, Grease, Tire repair, + magnetic trays
2nd shelf: Thread repair, extractors, low profile kit, serpt tool, levels, tq wrenches and my personal **** (keys, locks, cards, notes)

1st. Drawer: Air tools( impacts, ratchets, hammer, cutoffs) + impact sockets and accessories.
2nd. Drawer: Corded tools (grinders and drills)
Left rack: Pry bars, hammers, impact extensions, 1/2 ratchets+bars, pipe+adjustable wrenches.
Middle Peg broad: Files, wire+reg brushes, hose tools, cutters, scrapers, cordless impact + drill.
Right rack: Spray cans and propane mini torch.

My Box sitting on said cart.
Top tray: Chrome socket and misc stuff.
1st. Drawer: Picks, punches, knives, seal tools, mini files.
2nd. Drawer: 1/4", 3/8" drive tools and extensions and adapters.
3rd. Drawer: Screwdrivers.
4th. Drawer: Regular pliers (needle nose, slip joint, dykes).
5th. Drawer: Water pump and Specialty pliers ( cobras, alligators, pliers wrenches).
6th. Drawer: Chrome adjustable wrenches and vise grips
7th. Drawer: Misc. specialty hand tools ( Snips+cutters , long punches, hack saw, exhaust tool)

Anything else is at a specific place in the shop. Pullers and such are by the press. Combo wrenches on the wall, Welding stuff on the welding table. So on and so on.

drawer 1: Empty! Not for long, but the **** that was in it moved to the new cabinets I installed.

Drawer 4: Drill bits
Drawer 5 (full width): Misc stuff, like wire holders for soldering, torches, etc.
Drawer 6: SAE sockets
Drawer 7: Metric sockets
Drawer 8: Wrenches
Drawer 9: various kits (brake service, leakdown tester, AC service, etc)
Drawer 10: Heavy stuff, like the angle grinder, sawzall, etc.

Short drawers top to bottom:
Drawer 1: Junk drawer! Pencils, tire gauges, knives, inspection mirrors, etc.
Drawer 2: Files, chisels
Drawer 3: Soldering iron and related things
Drawer 4: Electrical tools (multimeter, current probe, GFCI tester, etc)
Drawer 6: Deepwell and impact sockets
Drawer 7: Socket wrenches, torque wrenches
Drawer 8: picks, other thin tools that aren't screwdrivers
Drawer 9: Dremel and bits
Drawer 10: Air tools.

everyones tool selection, variety, and quantity is different.

my "working" tool selection and "garage" tool selection are vastly different, as well as the way they are arranged and stored.
i have lot more "leeway" in how stuff is stored/arranged in the garage vs how my service truck is currently laid out.
