Depends on what the market is like in your area, prices vary a LOT depending on the local economy.

Yep. The SO man around here was just saying that this used market is starting to look like the early 90's when guys around here were selling stuff for pretty damn cheap.

I'm in Baltimore, Maryland. But hell-- if it means saving $1000 off the price, albeit spending $200 in gas, I'd take a weekend road trip to pick up a box from a state or even two states away.
Is craigslist the best source?
And, in which states or cities should I start browsing...?

CL seems to be the main place, but putting the word out that you are looking for a certain sized box and have cash to pay for it can turn up local deals. Someone that knows your area better will post some suggested offering prices, then start low and make some offers.

alright, below are some selections I've been looking at. Only gone to see one of them in person, the "snapon1100". The photo names are brand, and asking price.

The "snapon1100" was actually 2 toolboxes bolted to a shared rail, on 4 casters--you can see the edge of the second box in the photo. The two boxes were KRA-655B, which I couldn't find any info on. I think they were ball bearing.

What is the craftsman industrial series of toolbox, where does it fall quality-wise? Unfortunately, "craftsman" means anything from $100 for the cheesiest **** (but hey, if you just need a drawer), to $3000 for the same dimensions in a heavy-gauge box rated to a couple hundred lbs/drawer. Sellers don't always know which craftsman they have until you drive out to see it.

I'm similarly worried about the kennedy-- is it likely to have thick gauge sheetmetal, ball bearing guides, etc.?

Finally, what might you offer on the snapon box that is not ball bearing...?

Those are just asking prices, I can certainly suggest a lower one. I'd like your advice on what YOU would spend, or offer, and worst the seller can say is "no."

Oops: hover over the photo to see the image name. Thought that it might be shown in text.
My budget is, the lower the better, but to get a box worth keeping for a few years. ~$1000 would be best, and if they'll take some partial barter then I can stretch it further; or I can manage say $1200.
The $3000 boxes I'm not looking at.

CL seems like east coast has better deals on snap on boxes. They seem to go for almost half of what they do on the west coast. I just drove to AZ from CA a week ago to buy a KRA 1981 bottom and middle box for 250 dollars, then found a 1971 top box for 200 plus a free kennedy roll away. I sold the kennedy for 100 so the top box was 100 total price for three boxes 350 plus a speeding ticket on the way to AZ:(

If either of you guys want, instead of paying $3,000 for a KRL7022, I have a KRL1003 I can sell you for $3,900. That includes a hutch with doors. This is a full 29" deep triple bank in decent shape. (Red). Send me a PM if interested.

just had a customer go and buy a krl1022 for 3000 last week. I tried to find a used one for him, but no luck. I have seen some really cheap stuff on CL in the last 6-9 months. I wish I had a bigger garage and more MDK money ( mama dont know money )
cash speaks really loud when people are in a bind and they will cut their prices if you walk away.
