Tool box wrap and makeover

Hi guys. I had the opportunity to pick up a Snap On roller cabinet and top box for free, but it had some rust and paint damage from being exposed to the elements. I got it, took it all apart, washed it as best I could and then assessed what I had. I did not want to use it in its current condition so I knew I wanted to either paint or wrap it. I didn't have time to dedicate to fully body-working and painting it all at once so I decided to wrap it a little at a time over several evenings. I have always loved the Ford GT Heritage color scheme so I went as close to that as I could. I'm waiting on replacement rails for the missing drawer so pretend it's there. What do you guys think?

I do have a question though. When did the iconic Gulf racing livery become known as "Ford GT Heritage color scheme"

I guess I never realized that was a Gulf color car. I always saw Gulf signs as a darker color blue and orange. Thanks for the correction, I yield to your knowledge. I appreciate the comment though, it was a lot of work!

That’s amazing! Hopefully you got rid of those surface rust spots though, they can come back to haunt you. Don’t mean to be a downer, I’ve had small rust spots that have come back to destroy huge projects.

I always wondered how wraps hold up when scratched or scuffed, guess it has to be as good as paint or better...but...once there is a tear, is it all going to peel?

I had a couple of small tears during the learning curve and was able to just place a small patch over them and they disappeared so I have high hopes for the long term.

Actually I spent quite a bit of time with a wire wheel and my sander getting rid of all of the blistering, rust and damaged paint. That took at least as long as the wrapping. I’m glad I went with the wrap because body-working that thing to a paintable point would have been “want to prohibitive”.

I wrapped my box 5 years ago. Use it all day 6 days a week and it is holding up great.

Wrapped my box as well, my two tone job is far from perfect but way better than I could have done with paint. I can't even imagine how much work it was to pull off what you did, that is a masterpiece!

The boxes look great! To the ones that have wrapped their boxes, about how much did the materials cast and what physical amount of materials did you use. I have a KR 660 that needs some love. I’ve had my mind on redoing it, but the time to strip, body work, prime, paint, and everything has me having second thoughts. Thanks!

I spent ~$120 on vinyl for my MB1500 (you can do it cheaper by using discount brands but strongly suggest you use either 3M or Avery Dennison for quality/ease of installation.) I could have done it with less material but that would have meant more cutting and seam work than I wanted to tackle in a first time project. I ended up buying a 9x5 roll of black for the cabinet and a 3x5 roll of gloss red for the drawers. If I had to do it over again I would have used knifeless tape for the seams which would have allowed me to use less vinyl while getting cleaner corners in the corners of the cabinet opening.

Did you watch a video, or take a class for the vinyl wrap installation?

Sorry OP, if I’m hijacking this thread! Did you wrap the entire drawer or just the front?
