I think GJ could use a dedicated Tool Box forum. I have been searching for info on boxes and they are all scattered here and there. just my 2cents.

My real question for you guys is: Have any of you taken a box of marginal quality, say crapsman, and made them better i.e. beefier slides, multiple slides, added some metal, ect…..

Cheaper and easier to just buy a better box.

I have to agree. If you are patient, you can find a good deal on a better box.

That said, nothing wrong with having a project to upgrade a box if you would enjoy doing it. Most of us here have done projects that are fun but don't make sense economically.

I did replace the slides on a old Kennedy with ballbearing slides from HD worked out great. Other than that maybe a piece of 1/4 plywood in the drawer to help it from sagging.

Agree, the owners here might consider adding a "Tool Storage" sub group. But then the Vise Squad would want their own and the Plomb Nuts would lobby to have one and where does it end?

You can get a truck brand box pretty cheap on craigslist I just seen a Snap on KRL 1022 Master series box in good shape go for 2k it went fast. there some quality boxes out there if you just hunt and if you don't need to move it around just find a Lista or Vidmar set up used on Craigs list.

Lista is on my wish list hard to argue with 440lb drawer capacities. But I am not really digging their layouts unless I go custom.

I hear what you guys are saying.
I am looking for a box for my big tools 3/4" drive and such.

Would be interesting topic. They have a entire thread to 4 and 5 drawer HF carts. I think many upgrades would come on older boxes that have friction slides and making them ball bearing. If buying new box better off buying something better to suit needs.

Even if buying used.

I bought a Kr560b with a moderate sized dent in the side, and kind of shabby looking in general. Still perfectly functional and solid. Paid $500.

I decided I would straighten it out and repaint it on my week off. Figured it would take a day or two of light messing around work and maybe $50 ish in supplies.

Well, it took almost a full day just to take it apart and wash it well.

Ended up taking the full week of reasonably hard work.

I quit counting how much it cost me at about $150.

Yes it looks a lot better, like new almost, but I would have been a lot better off buying a nicer one for $1000, or just using it as it was really.

I have a kr550 top I was also going to do, I have since changed my mind on that.

Nothing wrong buying used at all. There are a lot of deals to be had. The older I get I find more my time is valuable so with that said it all depends on how much work, time and money to want to put into a project.
