Tool Cart Advice

I found a Cornwell 4 drawer cart model CTBMM100RG on craigslist. Guy is asking 375 but I plan on trading a gun for it. Anybody have pros/cons of this box? Construction sturdy? All i've really been able to find is that it has a 500lb capacity (HF 5 drawer advertised as 704lbs). Any opinions are welcome

I had one, it is an alright unit. I had mine way over filled with spare pins, bolts, nuts you name it when I worked in an at shop. I ended up trading it off because it didn't fit my needs over time. That cart is imported and sold by a number of people including Matco and Napa.

Save some money and buy the HF. I love mine. It's a cart that someone can use daily every day and it can stand the abuse.

I have the 5 drawer HF in Florida, however I'm currently working near Indianapolis and have no tool storage, period. I've found a few on craigslist but nothing comparable to the price for my 1911. Really looking to trade if at all possible. But overall, decent quality is what I'm gathering.

Anyone in Indy looking for a 1911?

But, if you take a gun to HF and ask to trade for a cart, it might not end well.

Looks like a good box, depending on your needs, the hf may/not work. So choices.
Have you looked at other brands though.
Or just getting rid of the gun?

The problem is, I'm pretty short on time.

Have him through some tools in to even up the trade.
Show him apples, for apples it's not even. If he no goes, then strait up trade.

Just my opinion, but I would keep the 1911 and find another way to get a box..that is unless you have a few 1911s and are willing to give one up. I dont think I've ever seen a tool cart even new, that is worth trading a good 1911 for.

friend has a blue one like that, and ive seen them with different drawer pulls under the matco brand. they are 900 or so new, so its a fair price from what it would cost off the truck. still.... a HF is only 160 with a coupon and you can sell your gun and have cash.

all in how quick you need a cart or cash

It seems like you would be ahead by selling the gun and buying a cart outright.

I'm personally not a fan of flip top carts. Doesn't go well with my bad case of horizontal surface disease. IMHO a better cart is a bottom box with a slab of wood on top. That you you can use it as a work surface AND still access all of your tools. YMMV though. Something like an older KR557, KR555; or even a 26" box would be ideal. Just my 2¢

Wow. I agree. First I've heard this anywhere. Even the sliding top carts don't seem to be a great design solution. They may be strong, but they certainly aren't work platforms. These roll carts make sense for lube techs, or guys who aren't taking parts off, wondering if they can be fixed or replaced.

The low price and configuration of the 44" really makes that an attractive item. I handled one in the store last week. The one I touched had simply drawer friction detents, which i much prefered to the cheesy latches of the 56". The 5 drawer cart is significantly larger than I imagined, but somehow also seemed to have considerably less strorage space for such a large cart. The top is limited in width by the gas struts. The drawers are narrow due to the leg system. Almost rather weld angle iron to a top box and make a cart out of that.

Used my hf 4 drawer top as a work surface, when i needed to. But we have a work bench aswell.

Go sell the 1911 on armslist.com .... it is a free online gun classifieds.....I have sold many guns & ammo on there.

Then buy the HF cart & put the other $300 in your pocket!

My experience with Cornwell phone support is that they don't do it. Without a driver, there's no warranty. Thats how it was for me.

That's great, but what happens when you need a tool from the top compartment and you have the top work surface full of misc, how do you access the compartment without dumping everything on top?

I have no love for flip top carts. I use a Kennedy roll cab from the 50's with a wood top and a hydraulic lift cart.

I really would rather sell it and buy a HF cart again and pocket the change, but I'm short on time. I appreciate all the advice. I'll give it another few days to see if I get any bites on the gun

Try checking your local gun shops.

You won't get as much as you will selling outright, but it still might put you ahead of a trade.
