I like the magnetic units, myself. More flexibility with the number and size of wrenches, and you can stick an extension or a socket in any un-used space.

Our Matco guy uses these to hold sockets and sets in place on his truck while it drives down our horrible Memphis roads. You'd about have to hit the cart hard enogh to flip it onto it's back... in order to knock the wrenches loose.

YA209 from Snap-On. All the tool trucks sell them, and someone else probably has them cheaper...

Snap-On YA209 (24" long)

They also have the black 24" YA161,
and a 13" version of each, too.

I have to agree with TNToy I would prefer that magnetic ones, although they do sometimes scratch the hell out of your wrenches(but they're going to get beat up anyways)

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but what do people use w/ stainless (Costco) tool boxes? Maybe there's something out there with a lip or mounts in the box handle holes?

Depending on the metal content, stainless is normally labeled as magnetic or nonmagnetic. So they might still be able to use them.

The magnetic one I recommended isn't what you think.

You screw it to whatever toolbox or roll cart you want it on... and it holds tools magnetically. Looks like this, and the magnet is VERY powerful:

I like 'em because they give you a lot more flexibility when it comes to tool arrangement. If I'm replacing the swaybar bushings on a pre-'04 S40, for example, it goes like this:

I stick a 10,13,17,18, and 21mm wrench to it in order on the left half, a 10mm socket on a 1/4" flex-head ratchet in the middle... toss my prybar and airtools on top of the cart, and then stick a deep-well 14,15,and 17mm socket to it, along with a 1/2" impact swivel on a 6" extension - lined up on the right half of the magnetic bar.

Book time on that job is 4 hours. If I line my tools up in order, and put them back in order whenever I switch so I don't have 'em just rolling around in the top of the cart... I can get it done in 1.5 - 1.75 hours.

That's how we make good money. You get organized, and you know the size of every fastener and in what order they must be taken loose. Having everything you need under the car with you so you never have to go back to your rollaway makes you fast, even if you're not working swiftly.

Try doing that with a little rack that carries 12 wreches in order. Several of the guys here have carts loaded down with several complete sets of wrenches.. wobble, straight, and deepwell sockets... their airtools... etc. It makes the thing heavy (I usually roll my nearly-empty plastic Matco MTSC2 cart around with 1 arm) and there's too much stuff there. I like having what I need and ONLY what I need for the current job on my cart.

To each his own. :)

Nah. If I was working smart, I wouldn't have forgotten the 10mm 1/2" socket to remove the heatshield over the rear motor mount. There's an extra trip back to the rollaway. :p

It's just being organized... if you have to look through the sockets rolling around loosely in the top of the cart every time you swap them out, it costs you a lot of collective time.

By the way, when people look in our boxes and wonder why we have so many of the same tool, there really IS a reason. Speed. I posted in another thread that I have 15 ratchets and still don't have nearly enough, and someone else was asked on here why they had a drawer full of ratchets in their box. If you need a short 10mm socket for a tight spot, and a 12mm wobble on a 12" extension for another spot, it's faster to set up two ratchets than to switch out attachments. Every time you do that is just another chance to drop something somewhere you'll spend 15 minutes fishing for it.

:)

I'm currently (didn't finish on Friday, will polish it off when I go back in on Tuesday) working on a timing belt/water pump/oil pump cover on a 4cyl. Toyota Camry. I've never done one before B/C I don't work for Toyota. It's going to take almost the full 5 hours for me, because I have to figure out what I need for each assembly, and what fasteners need removed in which order.

If you did the serpentine belt on engine *** 3 times a week like I do, you could do the 1 hour job in 20 minutes all day long, too. Repetition builds speed faster than anything else.

The one thing that I dislike about all these websites is that you can't find out how much the shipping is until you give them all your information at check out. Many times, the cost of the item is great, but the cost of the shipping eats up all the savings of the great price.

Yeah when I worked at the Toyota dealer that's what most of the guys would use on their cart. A lot of times I would see those long zero degree offset S-O wrenches stuck to that magnetic bar.
