Tool cases/kits/boxes... keep or scrap?

I'm looking for suggestions, comments, advice on how to deal with the cases and boxes and kits that tools come in and with. Here's the situation:

I typically keep boxes from almost everything. Part of how I was raised. The habit has proved incredibly useful at times, moving between houses or apartments, storing things while away for months at a time. Moving into my house last fall would have looked like I bought everything brand new that day. Pots and pans even came out of their original box which they'd been stored in while I was living in shared apartments for several years.

Step into my shed (for now until the garage is built) and the theme continues. All these tools that come in a plastic molded case are kept in them, along with whatever may have been included (drill chuck keys, grinder wrench, included bit sets, even manuals and purchase receipts). Some of these are even kept in their original cardboard box. I can even see that's a little far fetched but it's a habit that was taught to me since birth.

Now before you start thinking that I have a pristine collection and don't really use anything, I'll fess up to the dirtier details. Anything that didn't come with a case or reasonable cardboard box (like pliers in plastic molded packaging) are a free-for-all. No real spot to call home, lucky if they can keep close with others from their set, mostly scattered across a bench or in a crate with other loose tools possibly related in jobs they perform. I have a good excuse in that until this evening i've not had proper tool boxes for everything.

As a person, I am competent at maintaining a system of organization if it is already existing. Coming up with my own system is painful, difficult and the quest for perfection hits a roadblock when one detail doesn't fit the proposed method. Think pry bars and wrecking bars, it's all good with everything up to 36", then the 48" is on it's own so I give up on the whole idea and they all go back to leaning in the corner and falling down every time I try to pick one out. To keep a tool or set in an existing package means it is neat and tidy, but involves opening a cardboard box, plastic case, and unwinding the cord every time to use my hand drill. And all back when i'm done the job. Not time efficient.

So what are the forum's thoughts on tool cases and kits? I'd absolutely love to wrap my drill cord around it's handle and hang it on a hook ready to roll, but where do I keep the chuck key? Or that plastic second handle that i've never used but might someday? Or the cheap drill and spade bits that came with? Repeat for almost every power tool I own...

PS love this forum, wish I had all the time in the world to read every thread I see on here. Blows me away to see the skill and creativity of the community!

I would just get rid of the blow mold cases for most things. What I do with drill bits and bits is just throw them in a four drawer plano tacklebox. I do have some cases, my milfooke sawzall lives in its metal box since it can hold so much stuff and I got a skil drill I got for $2 that has a small case which does not take up much room in my metal cabinet. However, if you are storing your tools in like a cabinet then I would keep the cases since they can really help organize things.

I keep all cases. It helps for storage or transport. If yiu sell it it's worth more. I just like the organization if it.

Those live in the hammers drawer (bottom) with the huge pipe wench, huge c clamp, and some good stock/scrap steel

Interestingly those all live in the drill drawer.. 2nd from top drawer bottom box of grey stack

To the OP, I find better places to put my things, very few of my tools live in their blow molded cases. The only things that come to mind are my impact sockets in both my service truck and shop, and my socket sets in my pickup and service truck. Everything else goes with my space is a premium line of thought. I couldn't help but quote this above, my drills that still have chuck keys have the key taped to the cord as that normally forces me to unplug the stupid thing to change bits...... Long story on that........... The plastic handle that's never used? Depends on my mood that day I bought it,I've proceeded to immediately toss it with the box before but my current useless handle is sitting in the electric tools cabinet awaiting it's day with the trash can when I burn that drill up, it's been sitting there awhile. But back to the original thread, I don't really sell tools or anything, most of my stuff comes home with me to die lol, I also have lived up the same hollow since birth and have no intentions on moving. Oh dear would that be a horrible undertaking to move all my junk!it was bad enough to move me into my house........

Little plastic boxes or even cardboard in your toolbox drawers. I've got this that catches, say, extra chuck keys, air hammer chisels, wrenches for my pneumatic riveter etc

After re-reading your initial post and you have joined the forum, why not go to the dark side and check out the 'Lets See Your Toolbox' thread? You didn't mention a box at all so now that I've woke up a little more it sounds to me you really need to invest in a box. No you don't need a Snap On from the sound of things. You just need something to keep your pliers, sockets, wrenches, and specialty stuff in. From the sound of it I'll just go ahead and say it......... you need a Harbor Freight 44'!

i keep specialty tools (bushing/bearing drivers, tap & die sets, rad tester, temp gun, ect) in the blow molded boxes. they are much easier to stack in my service truck, or move from a toolbox drawer to a shelf or cabinet when i feel the eed to reorganize.
i think i have 2 sets of sockets that were ever in blow molded cases. the 1/4" dr set is still in it's case, the 3/8" dr sets i use too frequently to mess around with the cases.

some of my power tools came in cases, most of the cases are packed away on a shelf. less frequent used stuff stays in the case...

i pick up blow molded cases anytime i see them. never know when i might have powertool without a case or need to put together a "set" of something.

Thanks for all the replies! Interesting how there's a complete range of mindsets from one extreme to the other.

Well that was kind of the point that prompted starting the thread. I worked several years as a machinist, with my work tool box all set up and my home tools in the state that they are in now but less of them at the time. I've since changed career paths and work in an office now, so all my old work tools have been added to the home collection but minus the toolbox which wouldn't fit in my car the first time I moved across the country. Now with a house and getting settled in, I finally found a couple reasonable stand up toolboxes that might house close to half the collection. Putting together a plan before I go and completely disorganize things from the start.

In the machine shop, my toolbox was full of loose tools, the packaging long gone and most blow molded cases stashed, save for the ones holding certain tools like parallel set or mics. Not the neatest box in the shop but slightly better than the messiest. I always used the shop's power tools and they hung in the tool room, rarely a key or accessory to be found. Just trying to gauge where in the middle I can find efficient tool storage that still protects them and keeps sets together in such situations.

Everybody's replies are much appreciated and I'm going to re-read through the entire thread a couple times while deciding how my tools will be stored from here on.

The answer is it depends.
For stuff you use all the time you can keep it in your toolbox.
For all those tools you only use sometimes you should keep them in the case and on a shelf. I have a couple shells full of tools like that. In the case I can keep it all together and take it where I need when I need it
