May I suggest using magnetic labels, in case you change your mind at a later date and have to peel the labels off. The Toolboxtags site is magnet lables.

Since I have an engraving machine, I just made my own and put magnetic tape on the back

I just used a "P"-touch labeler. Mostly so my wife and kids could find whatever I asked them to find. Also, for when my friends came over to help me with my car build

Maybe its because I hate stickers on boxes, but I'd much rather not label my boxes. The more you use it the better youll know where everything is.

But, since you didn't ask my opinion on THAT, the label makers are good because you can make custom labels. The pre-made labels craftsman have don't describe exactly what I have in my drawers. Some people like Metric and SAE wrenches separate from one another, others combine them, so its best, IMHO, to just make your own.

label maker

bob

Yup, that was what I used, one of those cheesy label makers that spits out the thin strips with the indentations for each letter in white. You know the kind where you squeeze the little handle hard to press the letter into the colored strip of tape. These are old technology from the day. I put one on the center of each pull drawer, then covered them with clear tape so they would not pop off as they are prone to.

I did not do this so much for me, as I did for those times I am under a car/truck hollering at my wife or daughter which drawer a specific tool is in.

These work fine for me, but then I am not a high polish kind of guy so I am drawn to cheap and easy things that work, particularly when I don't have to worry about tools breaking and the like.

I have not gotten to a point where I need it yet, but I have used vinyl graphics for many different things. They are totally custom, fair priced, and reasonably durable. I started using them for lettering stock cars and I have found many other uses since then. Look for a local supplier and see what they can do.

I'm not huge on labeling my actual box.. but I do need to label my nut/bolt/supply stuff.. sometimes I forget what all I have. I'm in the middle of sorting through alot of it right now. I mean... at some point you just gotta sort through and trash some stuff. I'm young.. it'll keep accumulating I'm sure :)

i got a black box with silver handles, I used a P-touch with black back and silver letters, it looks like it came from the factory that way. Its not that I don't know where my tools are, I just like organization, I have friends over who help work on projects and they use my tools, so at least they'll know where they are and belong.

I just collect those FREE magnets that appliance salesmen and realitors give away that go on the refridgerator. Then I print up some labels from Office Max and stick-um-on. works great, free, quick and easy.

I used the same stuff as Unca Buck (Dymo Labeller, IIRC) . . . . I have a couple of Maintenance Days every year, where a number of riders cmoe over, change oil, race benches, and tell lies and war stories -- this way, everyone can find what they need . . .

so far, everything's been put back correctly, and nothin's grown legs!

You can get rolls of flexible magnetic strips at most craft places - just put a P-Touch label of the appropriate size on it and cut to length (probably 3/8, but you might find wider strips).

I agree http://zcalz.com has just released their magnetic line....and their very very nice! and their under $50.00
just put some on my box.

HOLY MOLEY! :wtf: $50.00! Get the cheesy one like I got used for $3.00 then head to the flea mkt or hock shop and use the balance to add $100 worth of used quality tools to the box man! Remember, it's not about the pretty labels, but rather the tools in the drawers.

I don't label mine because nobody but me is supposed to be in it....

and when someone needs something, they usually start at the top drawer and go down, so I can usually catch them before they find whatever it is they think they need.

I have never labeled a tool box. I have put outlines on pegboard for things like valve spring compressors, trans tools and stuff I hung at home. I just have always been able to set up a tool box so it work for me. I guess within two three full days of using stuff on a new box it just comes natural. Well see I might use the magnetic idea in MO as I try and set up the shop there. I have brought three of my unorganized tool boxes and two vertical file cabinets down for my tools and will have separate areas for machine work and mechanical so there will be overlap and It might be easer to start with labels as I get it organized. It is a little overwhelming at this point and it may take some of the edge off trying to get organized again. Now I will have space again. The garage here in IL I had way too packed to be effective with anything.

I lable mine, my son comes over to work on his truck. It stops us from taking time to explain where everything is. I am always adding tool boxes, and seperating tools even more, Lables are printed out on Magnetic Tape about 1" wide. This way they can be moved from box to box and drawer to drawer. Works great for us.
