To my understanding people who go to school to be come an automotive technician have a 50%ish percent or so discount on snap on tools, which is awesome.

I go to school for engineering. However, I was talking with our shop supervisor the other day and he said a representative from snap on was coming in. I asked why...yada yada yada (Seinfeld). He said that our shop or students may by buying tools from the snap on guy and said that we also would benefit from the discount. Is this true?

Also he said it may not work out and the snap on guy won't come by our school. Is it possible to still get a discount online? Through a code or something.

I realize there is a limit on what you can buy, but I would to buy as many tools as I can afford right now. To save money in the future.

Would appreciate any insight you experts have.

YES

Hit register there. Your rep will contact your instructor to verify that you are a student, and then you will be cleared to order online.

Matco's Discount
http://www.matcotools.com/TechEd/

Mac also has a discount program, you have to fill out an order form by hand though, I think

And some other companies like Ingersoll Rand do discounts too.

Our rep comes by the school every few months, so we do our ordering online.

Mac is 50%, and basically you just need the correct paperwork and someone to sign the page. From what I am told they don't actually check with the school.

Matco prices vary upon product with a total final value of $10,000 + a top or bottom 4S box. But is good for 2 years after your done the program.

How much is the SO discount?

Usually somewhat on the order of 40-50 percent.

Unfortunately as a student it's kinda hard to take advantage of these deals when you aren't making money while in school...at least I do make money in between the semesters, but not enough to afford much Snap On even at the discount price

I do plan on buying a goodly amount right before my eligibility ends. I don't have to have EVERYTHING I use made by Snap On but there is some stuff that they are rather good at that would be advantageous to have.

I appreciate all of the replies guys!

I have an advantage as an engineer. I will be taking a year of soon to work as an engineer.

And we get paid.

So I'm hoping to have leftover money to invest in some tools.

I'm thinking a torque wrench and a line wrench set so far.

Any other advice?

Get:
-dual 80 ratchets
-bit sockets
-FD+ Long combo wrenches (if they don't make long get standard)
-ratcheting screwdriver
-regular screwdriver sets
-line wrench

Don't get:
-impact sockets or regular sockets
-ratchet wrenches
-specialty tool
-tap and die set
-extensions (some exceptions to this though)
-torque wrench (unless you need tech angle)

Maybe get (if enough $$$):
-impact gun
-toolbox

Why no sockets or tap and die set?

You can get cheaper sockets and taps/dies elsewhere that work just as good.

Only thing about the tap and die set that might be beneficial to go through Snap-On is some drivers warranty them... however, not all do.

So here ie the deal, the SO discounts are actually up to 60% depending on the items. blue point can go that high, but if it is a rebranded (ptc, wilton, etc) t is about 40%. All SO brand stuff is usually 50% off.

I am 36, long time out of school, but I had to take a class for work (math class) I thought what the hell, let's ask around. Over at the campus bookstore is where all orders have to pass, they gave me the green light...about 6k later I have a hell of a setup. The only things you can not get with the student discount is KRL and EPIQ boxes (but you can get that EPIQ tool cart, that is bad a$$, mine is blue). If any of you have the ability to do this take advantage. Obviously make sure that school has an auto program before you look like a fool asking around.

My dad works at a ford dealer, all the new guys out of tech school are kicking themselves for not taking advantage. Most of them said the money went farther with craftsman, but now they wish they bought Mac, Matco or Snap-on for the everyday use items like wrenches and sockets.

Some programs have a dollar limit, especially if you go through the corporate websites. If they work with the industrial dealer (different that the dudes in the trucks...they deal with military, schools and large businesses) there is not a limit. The limit is if you piss off the person you are working with, then the Garvey train stops.

My rep is an industrial dealer. He says there is still a dollar limit but he has seldom had anyone run up against it.

The issue for me is that I am paying for school out of pocket and while Snap On will extend me credit I'm not exactly feeling the love for 19% interest.

I need to talk to my bank when it comes time to buy.

I think I'm only going to pick up a cart and a few items from the Snap On discount program. I don't need a whole lot that is available through the SEP program.

There is one significant advantage to this program, and that is if you want to buy one of the boxes in the program it comes with a certificate that will get you the retail value of that box off of a better box when you upgrade. the Heritage and Classic series boxes are what is available in the program. (Personally I'm going to roll with an HF box for now and upgrade to an Epiq in the future)

I'm getting the SEP discount and i'm in a Community College Electronic Engineering Tech AA program. I just saw on Gearwrench they have a student program(Ihaven't looked into that). MAC's student program they want you to fill out an order form and just get an instructors signature (pretty archaic) .

On my first order i'm getting the 3/8dr Metric mid-length impact sockets.

I guess I should clarify some things I already have. Full 3/8 set that is SK so I don't see the point in replacing that ratchet. I already have the dual 80 style ratchets in 1/4 and 1/2. I have a full wrench set metric and standard. Not snap on but they do the job and I see no point in replacing them. I have thought about getting a screwdriver set and maybe a pick set.

Since I have a full wrench set I am actually very inclined to get ratcheting box end wrenches they are convenient.

I don't want to get a box from what I understand the discount only lets you get a KRA series. I am leaning towards buying a great conditioned KRL series off of craigslist.

Why are you against getting a torque wrench, I will need one someday and in my mind snap on makes the best or one of the best.
