Tool? Dyson

No, not a Dyson Sphere.....

Okay, so this isn't your typical tool. However, it is a tool and I do use one. (Stay at home Dad, remember.)

Anyone else have a Dyson Vacuum? Do you like yours? Mine is awful. Sure, it may never loose suction but it never had much to start with! Are there any modifications to make this thing work better? How about a way to remove the brush and replace the belt. Way too complicated. With our luck, this thing will never die and I'll never be able to get a good vacuum.

When I worked at Sears; most of the complaints about suction were because the hoses/junctions would get stuffed full of **** and partially obstructed. From what your saying the power wasn't good from day 1; if you think you have a problem, they have a substantial warranty. For service goto: http://www.dyson.com/support/

I have a DC11 cannister and the cordless "dustbuster" type hand vac. Both have been OK. Warranty service (dead batteries) was great. I don't know that I'd buy another Dyson though. Fine dust gets caught in all the air channels and its quite a mess blowing it out with compressed air, and its palin that some functionality fell by the wayside to make a nicer looking design. That said I have gotten a good 5 years service from my cannister and it still *****

Thanks for the link. You are correct, I am far from impressed with Dyson. The wand works very well and is a well thought out design. It has very good suction. However I must compare it to the many Hoovers I have owned.

Many Hooves. MANY HOOVERS.... I was going through them at about 1 every 18 months. I have always has very large, long haired dogs. (Kuvaszok, Great Pyrenees, Bernese Mountain Dogs) The hair simply kills them. Even if you clean them after every use. They are great when they work. They actually lift the carpet from the sub floor! Now that's suction!

The Dyson seems to be a bit of a wimp. I know its clean. I know its not plugged. It just doesn't seem to work very well. I was just wondering if anyone else has the same take on them. They are played up to be the best. I haven't found this to be true.

I don't find the suction that poor on mine. My problem with it is the sub par aggitation on carpeting.

Dyson sphere is something I heard from scotty on an episode of ST:TNG, which was a sphere surronding a sun or star to harness the power.... At least I think or it was a bad dream....

Seriously I have a dc17 animal, and it works great, the canister is a pain to clean with out an air compressor, but I use my v28 milwaukee shop vac with the blower side, and it clean out all of the dust. It seems to have a lot of suction power to me, but I haven't tested it on anything, but has cleaned everything I have used it on, but one attachment doesn't stay on well, the brush with a rotating brush in head, to use on furniture doesn't stay attached to the hose well, but it does to the handle, but doesn't work well on furniture with the handle attached to long and clumsy.

Theoretical construct, but what Freeman Dyson thought would work is not the sphere that was seen in ST:TNG.

I am very unimpressed with Dyson vacs. My brother has one in his (work) office. It ***** but not in the good way. Overhyped, overpriced and overrated.

Mrs. J.A.F.E. and I are currently vac shopping. Actually, we just boyght a Eureka. We'll see but after 1 day it seems pretty good.

Freeman Dyson and his sphere, however, that's cool. Many SF plots incorporate the idea (and name).

I have a Dyson DC07 Animal and I am having the same issues. I had a Hoover Bagless Windtunnel that worked great for 5+ years. I really didn't take care of the Hoover either. I think I changed the filter twice (I blew it out with air about once a month).

The wife and I were getting a puppy so we figured a Dyson would really get the dog hair up (shows how the marketing worked on me). The Dyson just doesn't have the suction that the Hoover has. I would have to say I am a little disappointed in it, but not enough to want to take it back.

I got suckered into a Kirby. I'm hoping that it is the last $1200 I have to spend on a vacuum. It did come with carpet shampooing attachments and that definitely works nicely. The vacuum also drives itself, but is hard to turn.

Dyson vacs generally seem to be in the middle of the pack among Consumer reports ratings despite their high price tag. I don't always agree with CR ratings but testing vacuums seems to be pretty straight forward to me.

I have an old Hoover upright that I picked up at the town dump. It will try to inhale an entire throw rug if you give it half a chance. It just needed a belt and a bag.

Actually, a Dyson Disc is a more plausible theory. Imagine how many worlds you would have to **** to build something that large....


Anyway, Does anyone know how to take these vacuums apart? It seems every thing is clipped to something else and unless you start at the top, you will never get it apart. I really don't want to take the whole thing apart. It is working, not very well, but it is working. $300 for a new vacuum right now is not what I need to be spending money on.
