Tool I could not source!

Finally had some time over the weekend to get the Iseki 3 banger in my MF1440V apart far enough to do machine work and find out if the #2 bore will hone out within assembly tolerances. On Sunday I couldn't find my valve seal removal pliers (they are supposed to be in the cylinder head tool tote...see me pretending to get organized>?). Went out this morning and gave it another hour of the old college try but no joy. No biggie, I will just run into town and pick one up. Tried Gregg Dist, NAPA, local parts wholesaler and a few similar places over the phone, but couldn't find a single employee who knew what it was!! Once I sent them pictures, got no further. In sheer desparation I went to Graingers and predictably got someone who had no idea what any tool, part, hardware or much of anything else was, but she did make a genuine effort when I suggested calling one of their tool guys in USA. Could believe it when I had to do the whole what it is and what does it look like all over again - ultimately to find out they had nothing in their massive catalogue to do this rather essential and critical job. After lunch (yep, piddled away the ENTIRE morning!!!) called Matco customer service looking for a tool truck and also asked if they had this tool in their catalogue. The guy wasn't sure WHAT they were, but at least after a brief explanation/description it came to him. He did a deep dive into his records and found they had not one but two sizes....both discontinued in 2013.

Does no one remove valve guide seals any more? Is it that nobody works on cylinder heads? I should add that when I did google search, dozens of Chinese vendors had both the correct pliers and sets of pliers and various installation drifts. Do only Chinese mechanics fix cylinder heads?

When I did cylinder heads with stem seals I just used a flat head screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers. Check on eBay and I’ll bet you can find a set.

Getting hard to find automotive tools in S'toon. Sutherland have a few things from Lisle/KD. For a lot of tools, even if I want to give my money to someone in town it seems to be an uphill battle.

Current example, looking to buy an IR 2146 3/4" impact for the shop. Is $700 - $800 and a day away at multiple places online. For whatever reason my boss wants to get it in town. Two quotes today from local places, one right around $1400 and one at $1460, couple of weeks away.

Spoken by someone who works on engines that don't have valve guide seals. I left that world when the bunnies started to get funny and that required decent tools to pull the seals (I long ago made drifts to re-install). I even have aluminum sleeves to slide new seals over instead of the plastic **** that comes with new seals.

I was ready to pay the tool truck prices, but their phone numbers no longer easy to find. I sure miss the days where I could easily find the Herbrand, Mac and SnapOn guys since they were the same ones for years on end.

This doesn't help you but I am curious as I haven't used one on any of the older engines I've worked on, are you talking about something like this? Or the simpler long nose plier type device? Thanks in advance, always looking for useful tools I don't have.

I just replaced the valve seals on my Ferrari 308 engine using a Schley Products #62900 Variable Angle Valve Stem Seal Pliers that I bought years ago. It's great for seals that are down in recessed areas where the old seal needs to be pulled straight out. They can be used to removed seals from non recessed valve guides as well and if you are lucky the handle can be folded over some other object used as a fulcrum for some additional leverage.

Interesting tool.. I haven't seen one like hat, but can see it being useful. Since 99% of my work is VW/P/A I have only a very small range of seal sizes and styles but not sure ANY would work very well on the type on the Iseki. The one I made is size-on-size to the steel sleeve that presses over the valve guide - whereas most of these tools are designed to grab a chunky piece of rubber. Guard yours with your life...it is no longer in the Schley catalogue.

Spoke with Schley about this. They introduced long and short versions in 2002 and they sold well for a short time, but the cost to forge, machine and harden the long jaw pieces made them too expensive to keep when volume fell off. They still sell pliers version, but can;t reach into some heads. Wonder what the Euroweenies have>?

Yes, those are on the SO tool truck here. I can usually get better quality for a lot less money going Euro.

I assume that VW/P/A is VW/Porsche/Audi, coincidentally the seals that I used are VW/Audi 8mm seals used on the 8v VW Rabbit/GTI and the 10v Audi 5 cylinder engines, same as in my ur-Quattro. The Ferrari seals where hard Teflon and several had cracked allowing oil to pass by.

Never had the pleasure of working on a Iseki tractor, I have Olivers but not the Iseki built tractors that they imported and rebadged as Olivers.

Thought you did air cooled (as in VW with no seals)?
