I have a brother who keeps finding old tools for me at garage sales, but here is one I've never seen. Any ideas what this is? Looks to be some kind of cutter but that's all I can tell. Thanks.

I believe it's a race knife, used to mark timbers.

x2 on the "rase" knife. They come in a bunch of different shapes and sizes;even folding versions. I have a couple of them.In the picture the two middle ones are folding versions and the one to the right has a folding blade for doing straight lines and the pointed end for doing circles. These were used to mark barrels and such in the early days so the ends are smaller than the OP's knife. In addition to marking, they were also used to mark over or,"erase" marks on wood.
