Tool Inventory App Iphone or Excell help?

Hello
I know all the people here with all your tool you have, you must have an inventory. I had 3 tool boxes with tools all over the place. I recently bought a large enough tool box for all of my tools. I am looking for an application to inventory all my tools so I can keep a master list and stop buying the same tools over and over again. I have looked at Tool Tracker and I don't think I like the subscription and fees. Maybe someone has a excel file set up for this? I don't know how to set it up in excel either.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Tool Inventory App Iphone

I've got a google drive doc (dunno if Apple offers a similar cloud-based spreadsheet) set up with multiple tabs for SAE and metric wrenches, different drive sizes, punches / hammers / pliers etc. It's not perfect, but it suits my needs and keeps me from buying duplicates.

I try to edit from a PC (very much faster), but I reference it from my phone several times a week.

More to the point of your question, I set up each column for a specific tool type (ratchets, DBE offset wrenches, 6 point Proto sockets, etc.). Some are based on covering the basics, eg long combo wrenches; some are things I'm slowly trying to collect, eg top-knurled Craftsman metric sockets.

Each category (say, 3/8" drive tools, or metric wrenches) has a separate tab.

I have thousands of tools and I can remember damn near everyone without issue. But I'll be damned if I can remember my wife's birthday after 30 years. Lol

take photos of each drawer.
make an amazon wish list that contains all the tools you can find on their site.
Excel can be useful, here is a quick (less than 5 mins) example of what you can do to get started.

Really the best thing to do though when you put things in the bigger box, is to get things organized so it's not only moving, but really getting sorted out in the process.

The Amazon wishlist though is great as you can simply give one link to insurance agent and tell them to exclude whatever isn't relevant. Twice now I have got sufficient results with this without having to produce receipts because it was simple for them.

I might be able to whip up a simple app like that later on. What kind of features would you like to see?

Yea, that shouldn't be a problem. Feel free to post here or via private messages if you (or anyone else, really) has anything that they'd like to see. I have to finish project, but I might have more free time after that.

Would you like to see other things? Date purchased, any sort of sq/foot or inches calculator? Virtual tape measure? (For later on perhaps.)

I was looking at something like that as well. The license for the excel part is kind of pricey so that might be an optional purchase.

.csv and PDF are doable, though.

I set up a simple excel spreadsheet and add to it every time I acquire a tool. I'm no computer whiz, but it was pretty easy to figure out. Getting 25+ years worth of tools organized and listed in the spreadsheet initially took some time, but now that it's set up, it's easy to add to it when another tool ends up in my box.
