A couple weekends ago I was on my way to our local "transfer station" aka dump to do the weekly garbage run. I passed a big turtle in the middle of the road, and I stopped and carried him to the side of the road (wasn't a snapper, although we have them in MD as well) to carry on in the direction he was going. Hate to see turtles get squished.

Not 10 minutes later, after finishing up at the dump, I found a brand new Craftsman 10" x 3/8" quick release ratchet extension on the side of another road. Got rewarded, as it were, for my good deed!

Now that seems like some luck! I agree with the turtle thing though!

Where I am from originally (Muskegon MI) they actually put of "Turtle Fences" along the highway near the Muskegon River flats, to prevent the turtles from getting onto the highway. I am not sure how successful they have been, but they did it.

I save them to I am up to 6 this year the biggest was a snapper 12" wide. I had to use a folding chair to get him off the road.

I pick up those snappers and put them in the back of my truck bed.
Take them home and put them in a barrell and feed them bread and water for about 3 weeks.

Cook them up a few weeks later for some good eatin'

It's a personal choice of mine to help turtles cross the road. The wife and kids know if we pass one, I AM turning around to render aid. My biggest was a snapper that was at least 16 inches across the shell. He was huge and not happy to see me. We made peace and went our separate ways.

I did, however, miss out on the free tool give away!

Talking about turtles, a few years back there was some sick s.o.b. that was purposely running over turtles around my area, along with other critters. A few friends and I made it a point to catch as many turtles as we could........... and glue roofing nails to their shells. Needless to say not long after we stopped seeing massive amounts of roadkill in our area. But I too help out turtles when I can, normally I take them to the other side of the road, sometimes I just turn them loose on my place.
