so Far he picked a few Dual80 3/8 and 72 tooth Dual 80 1/4 ratchets, a blow gun, and a swivel fitting, any other must haves from snap on?

I think I'm missing the question....... your asking what other S/O tools he needs or what other tools in general?

I mean bang for the buck you could do better than S/O for a kid who's just starting out... a blowgun could've come from almost anyone. Same with the swivels. I'd spend some $$ on combo wrenches, good sockets... your hardline stuff that gets abused spend some $$ and get the better stuff. Its kinda hard to comment beccause I don't know how much spinning of the wrenches he'll actually be doing.

first of all, what kind of work will he be doing? $200 wont get you much snap on stuff. i am in the student program. i know the tools are alot of money and i would advise you to spend as much money as you can on the stuff you will be using most often. you will never get another chance to buy new snap on stuff for 50% off again, so make the best of it.

also, see what other companies you can get the student program with. matco is another good one.

im not so sure id call it SUFFERING...unless you are talking about the ratchets...the only snapon tools in my box right now are ratchets and line wrenches craftsman ratchets shouldn't be allowed to have USA on them

Im in the student program for all the trucks my number 1 purchase would be from matco gearwrench 12pc set (ratcheting flex head) for $105.

I think you should buy just 2 ratchets from snap on a 3/8, 1/2 dual 80 and a simple flat and phillips screwdriver. For sockets and wrenches get a craftsmen set when they have their 50% sales. Gets a set of channel lock or Klein pliers at a pawn shop (around here a lot of electricians pawn their pliers). This totals a couple hundred dollars but in my view is a great beginners set.

As he becomes more experienced and grows he will be able to expand his set and but specialty tools.

Depends on what he is going into. If it just automotive, then I would drop the simple things like the blow gun and swivel like others have said. I would add some combo wrenches and their flare-nut wrenches. If he is going into trucks or equipment, then I would definitely get the std. angle wrench set (3/8-1 1/4). Also just because its not on the list doesn't mean he can't get it. My industrial rep from school got me anything I wanted.

haha, I asked the same, its called abuse of the program, only one of each item can be sold. One tool box top, one bottom, one cart, etc. Anyways, He was thinking of what can you get on a budget, not nessecarily 1-200 bucks but within reason. What does snap on sell thats definitly worth the money. Sure as hell isn't there impact guns. He already has an IR. He has alot of craftsman stuff, a whole chest. Sockets don't matter so much, its the craftsman ratchets that really ****. And as for proffession, at this point, he wants to get his CDL and drive, no proffessional wrenching for him.

Is the locking flex head any better then the normal flex head? I used a buddys and the flex head would just spin whichever way like a normal flexhead and make a clicking noise as the lock would just skip. are they all like this? sometimes when you turn the ratchet, if you were changing handle position through the 'stroke' would the lock prevent that?

and thanks a ton for providing that.

Here are some questions.
If you were to purchase the Dual 80 set, which he probably will, is there any sense in purchasing the Long handle flex head 3/8 and the fixed head long handle 3/8? Or is the fixed handle not going to get used? I agree about the little stuff he wanted, like the blow gun and swivel, that can be bought elsewhere.

IMHO, I had the Comfort Grip ratchets and did not like them all that much. I like the heft and feel of the standard chrome handles much better. The Comfort Grips, while comfortable, retained too much gunk and grease. I had to use a cleaner and and rag (instead of just a rag) to wipe them down to keep them really clean.

The locking flex will be all that your son needs - it can be locked into the "straight" position and kept there until unlocked. The lock is exactly that - it doesn't change position until you want it to.

I have a non-locking flex 1/2" ratchet from SK and I don't like it. It is a 72-tooth design which is nice, but the flex is floppy and cannot be tightened like the SO design. I'll be replacing it with the SO SX80 when I can.

Comfort Grip ratchets ****... if wet it can slip, and gets dirty easy...
I have 2 of them, they ****!! I tired of cleaning them...

In all seriousness, I would pick out a long pattern wrench set and a set of flex-head ratchets from Snap-on. There are allot of great alternatives for the other tools.

any pros, cons, reviews? Good list? Anything I'm missing. Basically I'm after the snap-on must haves for 3-400 bucks. (haha..budgets and there limitations...150...then 200..now 400)


The last 3 are on the list but also on the, not really nessecary, wouldnt kill me to pay full price later on list.

also, Since the 24 and 17 inch long handles for the 1/2" locking flex head are only 6 dollars difference in price, is the 24 going to be more of a hassle then a luxury? being too long to handle/use?

I have the Craftsman chisel holder and found it to be worthless. I have no control of the chisel or punch since I can't stabilize my hand on the workpiece. Also, the way the chisel is held in there you can't readily change the angle of attack without unscrewing the holder and repositioning the chisel. I used it one time only. Maybe the Snap-on offers some advantage.

I'll go see if I can't find a link to the craftsman one, But The snap on one works awesome. Used one alot on a tailgate we built for a rack truck.
