Tool OCD

So I’ve been organizing my tools in my toolbox. I have found that when everything has a place, I obviously can see if something is missing. More than that though, I tend to keep my workspace cleaner and more organized as well. This has lead me to purchase some different types of organizational devices to help me. I bought the Craftsman Socket Organizer Set for all my sockets.

I actually really like it...the only problem is the empty holes!!

Does anyone else have any similar stories, or am I a special kind of weird?

Oh no good sir you are in good company here. We all have varying degrees of OCD here.
Me I like the socket holder strips. I just grab and go with all the sizes I might need for that range.

When you've spent years implementing and enforcing 5S protocols it eventually becomes engrained into your everyday habits.

It takes little effort to put back what you grabbed than it is to locate something in a big huge mess that has accumulated over time

That may be true, but wouldn’t I still have the same problem if I was using the Hanson tray’s or Harbor Freight trays? I’d want all the spots filled.

Sure, that's never going to end, but with the Hanson-style trays, you'd have all those sockets, plus additional room for more tools.

I use OldSchool Snap-on metal socket rails; no space wasted.

I’ve got all my 1/4 sockets in the lisle magnetic socket holders for every size deep, shallow, 6 and 12pt. I loved the trays but now the problem is I’ve got 1/4 mid Length sockets and no where to put them. It never ends! The rest of my sockets 3/8 and 1/2 are in the plastic trays that they came in from snap on.

Well said. I like to have all my ratchets to be in the off position and the detent balls at the top.

I like the Hansen trays (all filled) the best for my deep and shallow sockets. I often pull the whole tray and drop it into may cart for some projects. Other times I put the extensions and drive tools between the deep's and shallow's and just carry the tray to where I need it. I have other sockets on metal rail, plastic rails with the sliding squares, Hanson hex/torx trays and ones I made myself. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Those CM socket organizers are what they are. IMO they take up too much space, I replaces them with a combination of HF and Hansen organizers, and gained a lot of space

FYI, snap on now has 3 row Hansen style trays to accommodate the mid length sockets. I'm 99% sure they are made by hansen

I'd rather have the trays with the sizes listed so I know what I'm lacking. Even if there are holes. My OCD is mainly one of not wanting to NOT have a size I may need when I need it.

I use original SO set trays for some sockets. Others on McMaster sheet metal strips. The McMaster strips are difficult to get the sockets off of but at 77 years old I am not in a hurry anyway. It always amazed my son that I could open a drawer after he had worked on his car and immediately identify any missing tools. Socket "organization" shown below.

That's not OCD - that's a great, common-sense aversion to wasting storage space and having to buy more storage! I have that aversion and I'm proud of it! LOL

My work tools ride a plastic jug with a hole in one side. Not a lot but I know precisely what is where and get them back every time. It only looks like a mess until you use it a few days.

Antique tools in a glass display case in the house are not laid out as neatly as some of the guys here do with the Harry Homeowner red garage condo for chrome.

The home repair kit stuff is mostly sorted into a 3 tray tool tote and changes after every little job. Yet I know what is in it.

OCD to a point in the micro where some guys spend more time aligning logos in socket trays than using sockets. Takes all kinds to turn the world.

The guys at work make fun of me because I wipe down all my tools before they go back in tool box. I keep my impact spotless. They walk by and wipe grease on it. It bugs them that I keep it clean. It's a nitrocat 1200k ; 2.5 years of abuse and looks and runs new. I don't grab it with oily gloves. That's why mine's clean and everyone else's Aircats are black.

As long as you don't put a coat of wax on your tools, you're not overboard.

Same thing happens to me at my shop, I use the tub I towels wipes to clean everything I take out of my cart and put back in my box. I have the Milwaukee m18 drill and impact that I’ve had for over 4 years and they still look new. Everyone gives me **** about it, I even wipe my box down with micro fibers and quick detailer.

You are not alone i bought something similar from princess auto and I don't have full yet and it drives me crazy every time I look at it but it does have some weird sizes

I use my tools in a shop every day, they get wiped down after use and before going in a drawer. I know where everything is and I have not lost anything in yrars. Now that said I watch all my coworkers constantly leaving tools eveywhere and cant dind anything lol

I do wax the outside if my tool box atleast twice a month lol

My problem is I keep swinging from a minimalist approach to have every perceivable tool I need in my setups. I've got tons of excess storage containers, tool bags, and boxes from trying different setups.
