My dad invented the common ratchet tie down strap. He was a Loadmaster in the USAF and did it while on the job. Got a $900 bonus check from Uncle Sam.
I discovered this one day back in the late '70's when I was a teenager trying to figure out how to work one. (Yea, I was a really stupid kid) I started cussing and said " I'd like to get ahold of the SOB that invented this POS"
Dad looked at me and said, "Well, he's standing in front of you."

That's awesome.On a related note one of the big tool companies (iirc Lisle or otc) will take your ideas and if worthy will produce them and pay you a royalty.
