This is the one that I have but it's not for tools. It was a process that I came up with while in R&D work. http://google.com/patents/CA2358552A1?cl=en I also have a few trade secrets that I came up with but they were kept in-house and not patented. This is what the early prototypes looked like.

Post what you have. I think it's awesome people here have patents.

Yeah, I would but I like to keep my anonymity here on GJ and the internet in general and sharing it would give all that away.

I will say this though: Almost anybody with common sense and a bit of forward thinking could create a patent. Most patents are not really that exciting or earth shattering, but ARE a unique way of doing things or design of something (either process or design is patentable, or both). Often, patents come from people from one area of expertise exposed to another field of study. What is commonplace in one area of expertise may never have been combined with the other, making an innovative moment. Getting a patent though takes a few years and is expensive, so unless it is really a profitable one, not really something most people should go and do on their own. My company paid all of $100 for each patent I got and they own all the profits from them.

I had one two years back I thought of that would have been a really innovative one for an engine component. I did a patent search and a lousy German company by the name of Mercedes patented *exactly* the same idea exactly one year before! :wtf:

I have several company protective properties also, not patented but could have been. And a few in the works. I'm more interested now really in mentoring or teaching others how to be creative than getting any more patents myself. That first one is nice on the wall. - Paul, ME on the side for a long long time :willy_nil

I was the idea 'inventor' listed on a patent granted to my employer for cable ties.
Can't get more specific than that.

My dad invented the common ratchet tie down strap. He was a Loadmaster in the USAF and did it while on the job. Got a $900 bonus check from Uncle Sam.
I discovered this one day back in the late '70's when I was a teenager trying to figure out how to work one. (Yea, I was a really stupid kid) I started cussing and said " I'd like to get ahold of the SOB that invented this POS"
Dad looked at me and said, "Well, he's standing in front of you."

On a related note one of the big tool companies (iirc Lisle or otc) will take your ideas and if worthy will produce them and pay you a royalty.

Garage journal should have a think tank and see if we could get a tool made. Let the royalties go toward the cost of running the website.
