I was toying around with the sewing machine and I came up with these.

I was told I should make them to sell. Is there enough interest in these for me to make and sell them?

Those look nice, but I don't know how much money there would to be made when competing with effectively slave labor and massive bulk material discounts that chinese companies have.

I wouldnt be able to compete with any chinese slave companies, but it would be more of a side hobby for me. But I would definitley use the best fabric and thread available, and make them in USA.

Your work looks nice, wyattstihl.

Here are some folks who had the same idea as you and now have a modest business making tool rolls and things related:

Their products look nice, but ive been trying out some fabrics they dont have there, and the prices I had in mind were quite lower than theirs. Im just looking to have a little side income from this for now.

One of my tool rolls was made by a local tailor of my town. I bought the amount of fabric she needed and with a printed photo she made a nice and solid wrench roll. I dont know prices in USA or if there are any tailors left, but here was 11€ total. In my opinion is a great business and maybe you can sell them on internet.

Those look well done. My idea is make a few extras, take some pictures, and try to sell them on ebay. It could be slow going at first until word gets around. But if it picks up then you can investigate other avenues for selling them.

It might be cool to have some embroidered logo, or a little label that's made elsewhere that you stitch on.

(1) How much time to make each one?

(2) How much cost in materials for each?

Time to make one is between 30-90 minutes, and the fabric used and thread would be only a few dollars.

Mom made these for me going on 30 years ago. They're a heavy cotton flannel. I wash them every few years; looks like they're about due again.

Best part about the roll is I can get three wrench sets in half of one drawer in my two drawer road box. They fit tight so neither the wrenches nor the pliers rattle around in that drawer.

Thanks mom, on Father's day! ;-)

I am curious as to what the white fabric is on the edges, is that just a heavy canvas of some kind?

I can really appreciate the quality of these home sewn wraps. I myself would like to find or have my mother make a custom one just for ignition wrenches. I like my Craftsman ignition wrenches, but dislike the pouch I have to dump out every time. I did however special order a canvas ignition wrench pouch roll from Snap On at a surprisingly reasonable price (under $20 it seems), and also ordered their battery service tool canvas wrap, also handy to grab. These pouches seem to make transport convenient.

If you can make one that holds the 14 piece Craftsman nut drivers I may buy one if price is within reason.

I can do that no problem. It may be awhile, everything is still in the beginning stages. Price I estimate to be right around the $20 mark, give or take $5.

It's just a 1" cotton twill tape. Frankly, it doesn't feel very heavy duty. However, it has held up all these years so I guess it was the right material for the job.

I might be interested in something like this.

How would you plan on going about getting the pouch sizing right for sets of tools you don't own or have access to?

The sizes of the pouches are pretty adaptable and generous so they fit a wide range of tools.

Have you done any tests on different stitching to see what holds up best for tooling bags? Seems a double straight stitch with something like a 3 ply synthetic thread would probably be the strongest. I would think that some Wrench's may get heavy in a roll.

I tried upholstry thread and it was much too thick, it just clumped up the back of the fabric. I have been using some medium weight white thread now and it seems to work out fine.

The wife made mine out of old blue jeans---free tough material that is washable without showing stains too badly. She puts one of the belt loops on the side and that's where she attaches paracord to tie the roll shut. You can also use the belt loop to hook the set somewhere.

I think if you just did a handful of them and sold GJ members you'd do okay. I'd probably buy a couple if the price was right and if I could determine the rough layout.

I figure this would be a great seller. Fabric, Edge ribbon, and thread all made in USA, figure on about $12-$17 for it.

I'd be interested in some if customization is an option (number of wrenches, screwdrivers, etc).

I like both the first ones you posted and the last ones

I had customization in mind when the idea to sell first popped into my head. I can do just about whatever a person would need, in terms of size and color(within reason/what color I can find).

Sorry, ive been on vacation. I can make the pouch to your specs, and if you like it I can send it and you can pay via Paypal. Just let me know what configuration you want the wrench slots in and I can begin working.

And for the record, pouches I make are made from usa made black 12 oz bull denim fabric, and I can also make some out of 10 oz light brown canvas.
