Tool return causes amnesia!

I am considering having an exorcism done on my tool box. It seems that everyone who wants to borrow a tool knows with 100% accuracy said tools location.

The problem is that my tool box must emit some sort of an amnesia wave when the tools get returned because most of the time the tools are left on top of the box and not put back where they live.

I am apparently immune to this phenomenon.

Until I can have my tool box scientifically analyzed I have stopped loaning my tools.

Depends on who I borrow a tool from. Some guys are very **** about their boxes, and for them, I'll put it on a clean rag on top, so they know it's back. Others that I know well, simply have me put it back in it's place, and I let them know it's back. When we had our own tools at the plant, I'd rather someone that borrowed a tool either hand it to me, or put it the top tray and I'd take care of it when I did my clean up and inventory at the end of the shift. If I had the particular drawer open and was dealing with tools from there, then go on and put it in there.

I had a similar tool box to yours, but I should have paid for the upgrade that you got. The box I had emitted the the amnesia wave (AW) when someone borrowed the tools, so they forgot where the borrowed tools belonged. The upgraded box that you have works better than the AW module in my box. My solution is the same as yours, don't loan tools.

My son is the only one using my tools.

In spite of his obvious intelligence and abilities, he is seeming unable to reutrn a tool to its home and asking him to put tools in correct drawers (metric vs imperial) and in order of size is apparently too much.

But, he's kinda family and I can't fire him (again)

My wife used to get into my tool box and I would find my tools out side on the lawn where she had used it to remove and reinstall a sprinkler head. To solve this problem, I got her, her own box of tools. Now when I buy a box of used tools she gets her pick after I do.

I work in collision repair and hate borrowing tools. But with that said you do come across a time or two when you must borrow something because you have never had the need for such tool before. When am done with said tool I would always let the other guy know, ask which drawer it went it or if they weren't around I would sit it on top of the box so they would see it.

+ 1 Clean rag... wipe it down... put it away or in the in use bin... which for me is next to my tool box.

I would prefer tools are left "out" as opposed to put away wrong. A tool in the wrong drawer is pretty much lost until it's accidentally rediscovered.

My wife's cousin's ex husband was the one with amnesia. Came over when I was gone to borrow a 5/8" socket. Took every 5/8" socket and wrench. After that I discovered the lock on my tool boxes.

I'm a bit in this camp. When I loan a tool I ask that it be returned to the top of the box. I then know it's back and it's cleaned and inspected before being put away. I hate trying to get a tool that is not where it is supposed to be or finding it dirty or broken.

I'm with Larry on this. I like to keep track of the tools myself.

I have enough trouble keeping track of them when I'm the only one using them!

Same deal for me. All I ask is to just lay everything on the bench and I'll happily put it away. Drives me nuts when I go for one certain thing and it's not there. Only to find it much later in the wrong place.

Just be a total **** when someone needs to borrow a tool. That will stop most of the borrowing and when they do borrow they'll hand it back to you personally.

This has always been my preference also. A timely return, cleaned up, and placed in front of my toolbox.... Where I expect to find it. And definitely NOT on the "HOOD" of My toolbox. Triple nag for the parts personnel who dump parts off on top of a toolbox..

i used to lave things unlocked, and i could never find anything, because no one knew how to move a tool from the last place they used it.

i have a set that i leave unlocked, and listen to them with a sympathetic face when they can't find anything. i leave my set locked, and i dont loan anything out. interestingly enough, when i want to use something, it is right there, clean and ready to be used.

this is lost on them.

I always tell them to put it on top that way if it's not clean we can immediately discuss before it hits the drawer.

I got pretty lucky when I had to supply my own tools in the plant. I think over the 5 years or so I was in production, I had two sockets and one wrench walk away. To counter it thou, I ended up with a number of extra sockets, wrenches and punches that simply showed up in my box. Never figured out why someone had a BS socket in a Mil-Spec facility :dunno:

I always write down the name of the person I give a tool. I have a list which includes the tool, name and date.
Otherwise people "forget".
Anyway, the best thing is not to loan tools.

When I first started out at a dealership I immediately started buying tools like crazy. My collection got rather large in a short time. Then the problem arose, tools going missing. Well, it seemed the other techs felt what is mine is theirs. I fixed it by taking tools from all of them when one of my tools went missing. I had a massive collection before they finally caught on. Problem solved.

At the shop we have a rule if your not 110% sure where it goes leave it on top. I have lost tools in my own box because some one put them in the wrong place.

I'm gonna go with "Let me put my stuff away" as well. I don't want it in my box if it's dirty/greasy, or if it got damaged. I know sometimes things happen, but I need to know if it got broken.
I also want my tools where I say they belong, not someone else's idea of where they belong.
Also, if I get it back in my hand or where I have to deal with it, I KNOW it came back.

My wife and #2 son are the ONLY people besides myself that use my tools in my shop. They generally know where the tools belong, however, when they are done, I have a plastic sweater box on my bench. They place the tool or tools in the plastic box. I return them to the proper drawer

I bought a cheap kobalt set to loan out, anything in my box is not up to be loaned out! If I like you enough I will help you by using my tool on your project though.

I prefer they leave it on top of the box. If I see it I'll know its returned.

Also keeps them from looking through the box to find the right drawer, and seeing what else you have that they can borrow next time.
