Tool rolls. Anyone use them?

I was taking stock of some material I have from tearing apart some old military heavy canvas and leather bags and cases when I looked over at the heavy duty Juki sewing machine and thought, "I bet I could make something useful with that".

That said, I am considering making a few leather and waxed canvas tool rolls for some wrench sets I have been working on completing. It seems like a decent way to keep the brands/sets I'm collecting organized rather than just throwing wrenches in a box. It would also be handy for the truck tool set. Does anyone else here use leather or canvas rolls? Which do you prefer and why?

I wish I did, but the plastic part died on all of mine.
An extra tout one for files and a couple thread files seems like it wold be a great benefit in my road bag. Those things are just trying to urder each other and everything chrome.

I have a couple i use, bigger one has long sds drill bits and chisel bit in, the smaller one has wood chisel, files, and hvac pipe bending springs, makes it easier to keep track of things in the work truck. Oh, and got a set of extra long ring spanners that came in a roll. They are all made of some modern nylon plasticy cloth material.

I use them for keeping seldom used sets together. Like angle wrenches or obstruction wrenches.

I use wrench rolls for almost all my wrenches. One it keeps them nice, organized and compact in my Road toolboxes, or my work for friends and family box. They don't bounce and clang around too.

Two if I am working on my own stuff, and I go to the toolbox for a 14mm it is only a matter of time before I would go back for a 15 or 17. I like just bringing the whole roll to the job.

I have several made from old denim jeans. They work great in the truck box. Organized when needed yet minimum space when stored.

I have heavy fabric wrench rolls, my wife sewed them up for me, I used a old plastic one for a pattern. I have 3- one metric (8-19), one SAE (1/2"-15/16"), one for standard and metric stubby.

I store them in my toolbox, laid out in the roll, stubbys on the bottom, then metric, then standard on top. If I only need one wrench, I snake it out, if I need to go work on a project, I take the whole roll.

To me its the easiest way to store them. If you make your own, you can kind of size them for your drawers.

In my punch drawer I have a small denim one for roll pin punches.

I started using them while doing service work in poultry plants years ago. I got tired of losing wrenches and other various tools. After finishing a job, a quick check of tool roll would tell me if I had left anything on site. I now have all my truck wrenches in tool rolls for the same reason.

I have stuff in both factory plastic rolls, and canvas rolls. It also make finding tools much easier than digging around in a tool bag or box for loose tools.

In my estimation, the single answer to the tool roll question is Bucketboss.

I use their rolls exclusively. Nothing beats being able to line up your wrenches or whatever, and still put them in a drawer; or more importantly, drive rough roads without rattling.

I’ve got several for different wrench sets that Mrs. Tynee made for me several years ago as a birthday gift. She really thought through them pretty well. She found a heavy black leather-like vinyl at the fabric store that was lined on one side with felt. She payed the pockets out just right for width and height, and she even thought to sew a stripe of blue on the rolls for the metric sets so I could tell what I was grabbing quickly. If anybody wants to see them, I can dig them out. I’ve got them stored right now.

Crane operator, you must have a ton of floor space in your shop if you store all of your toolbox drawers on the floor.

I spent 20 years travelling around as a pilot and aircraft mechanic. I had my tools spread out in several Craftsman boxes each small enough to carry. I kept my wrenches in a Proto tool roll until the clear plastic failed. A friend used that roll as a pattern to make one out of heavy fabric reinforced vinyl that was being used to make waterproof bags. That was 30 years ago and it is still going strong!

My roll is sized to hold at least two wrenches of the same size in each pouch. In the smaller sizes I could fit three or four in a pouch. That way I could keep all my wrenches sorted by size, and as others have noted, keep inventory while on the move.

I put grommets in the upper edge of the roll, and lately hang it on screws on a rolling cart. If you don't keep your rolling tool box against a wall, you might consider putting hooks on the back side to hang a tool roll there. This won't work if you have to lock up your tools.

A ha- a sharp eye in the group. The picture is a recovery picture. A year ago a bunch of methheads decided they wanted one of our trucks, and welder/ torch, and all my toolboxes. They made the mistake of posting my welder on craigslist.

I ended up with 90% of the stuff back, they got a slap on the wrist. Picture was when I pulled drawers to get it all back loaded in the shop.

.

My rolls are also sized to hold two wrenches of each size, hard to pull out a bolt with only one wrench. My fabric is a heavy duck fabric, kind of like carhartts are made out of.

I like Wright wrench rolls. Heavy denim that lasts well.
Do a lot of field service work and they help with organization.
Keep a CLC tool roll in my car. Holds a great assortment of stuff, and has been very durable.

Great job on those. I think the DIY route is the best way to go if possible. You can really tailor it to your needs and customize its layout for what you intend on storing in it.

Nice job!

I have a few different rolls for some odd wrenches, as I prefer tool totes and my 5 gallon BucketBoss. But I'm beginning to lean toward switching over to tool rolls.

Made this one from the only usable piece of a Milwaukee too kit and the least usable piece of a Bosch tool kit with some seat belt like strapping for the hems. Only issue is I got too carried away trying to make it indestructible and it's too bulky.

So, since there is some popularity with these. I am working now on some leather ones and some canvas ones made from material from some WWII bags and satchels I had around. I figured all my plumb (wf) wrenches will fit nicely with that material. Aside from spaces to accommodate the wrenches themselves, should I add any extra slots/pockets for a blade, feeler gauges, etc. to finish the look?

This is to tool kit for my 911. I updated it a bit as the previous tool roll was a little hammered(i still have it for if and when I sell the car). I used the factory Blue and Black Pascha print that I used onto recover the seats. They had faded a bit over the years. I also had the tool kit sent out and stripped and replated with gold zinc to match

I hate them and can't understand why anyone wants them.

I used to toss them in the trash first thing off the bat until eBay showed me the errr of my ways. Now I sell them to strange people who like them. Like ya'll. :)))

A waxed canvas tool roll sounds nice.

I also came across these guys, this is the best looking tool roll I have seen to date. ATLAS46.COM

I keep my 6 point box-end combo spanner set in a roll in the bottom of my box, keeps them out of the way until i need one and stops them getting damaged when i put hammers or pry bars in on top of them.

I've got some cheap craftsman wrench rolls that I like. They're newer so who knows if they will stand up with time.

Love them. Especially for work when I show up with one of the smaller kits but most stocked one. It's usually the kit that accompanies me on road trips and off-road trips.

Gotta ditch the plastic pouches as mine are shredded.:3gears:

Tarbellb, did you buy one? I got mine and it’s great. I will post up a review ASAP.

Not yet! I really want one, but waiting to see if fat red dressed guy brings me one.

Please give a review once you get a chance, ive been plugging their stuff here based solely on video/images. Waiting for someone else to guinea pig :)

It looks well thought out at minimum.
